Liang Wenfeng, who is 39 years old, is the founder of DeepSeek, a new tech company from China. In a short time, his company has become very important in China’s technology world. DeepSeek has created a new model that is changing how AI (artificial intelligence) works and is making big waves in the tech world. When it was released, it caused a big drop in stock prices for many tech companies.

DeepSeek’s success shows how serious China is about catching up with the United States in the field of AI. Liang is now seen as an important person who will help China become a major player in new technology. His quiet work changed when he was invited to a special meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang on January 20, where he met with important leaders and business experts.
Liang Wenfeng: A Leader in China’s Tech Plans
Unlike big Chinese companies like Baidu, which focus on using AI for business, DeepSeek wants to do more research to make AI even better. DeepSeek’s latest model, DeepSeek-R1, is getting a lot of attention because it is cheaper and works better than the models made by companies like OpenAI and Google DeepMind.
Liang’s rise in the tech world comes when the United States has made it harder for China to get the technology it needs for AI. Liang wants to create new, original AI, not just improve on what other countries have already done. "China cannot always be behind. People often say that there is only a small gap between China and the U.S. in AI, but the real gap is in being creative, not copying others," Liang said in an interview last year.
From Hedge Funds to AI Innovation
Liang’s journey to DeepSeek is unique. He was born in Guangdong, China, and studied electronics and communication engineering at Zhejiang University. After finishing his studies, he earned a master’s degree in 2010.
In 2015, he started a company that managed a large amount of money (over 100 billion yuan, or about $13.79 billion). But in April 2023, he decided to shift his focus from finance to AI. That is when he started DeepSeek.
The team at DeepSeek is made up of smart people who studied at China’s best universities. They are all passionate about solving the hardest problems in AI. “The best people are attracted to solving the world’s hardest problems,” Liang said.
DeepSeek’s Open Model: A Challenge to Closed Systems
Unlike OpenAI, which keeps its technology private, DeepSeek has decided to make its technology open for everyone. This means people from all over the world can use and change the technology. “Even if OpenAI keeps its technology closed, others can still catch up. Open-source is more than a business decision. It’s a way to give people power,” Liang said in a previous interview.
Liang Wenfeng and DeepSeek are showing how China is working hard to lead in the world of AI. With his focus on making technology open and new, Liang hopes to change the future of tech.
