DeepSeek, a cheap AI company from China, caught global attention last month when it shared that training its DeepSeek-V3 model cost less than $6 million, using the less powerful Nvidia H800 chips.
DeepSeek launched the R1 model last week, which is said to be 20 to 50 times cheaper than OpenAI’s O1 model, depending on the task, according to a post on DeepSeek’s official WeChat page.
"DeepSeek's R1 is impressive, especially considering what they can deliver for the price," Altman said on X.
"But for us, we are excited to keep working on our research plans, and we believe that using more computing power is even more important now to succeed in our goals," Altman added.
DeepSeek’s growth has made people question why some big US tech companies have promised to invest billions of dollars in AI. Shares of companies like Nvidia, a major chip maker, dropped sharply. Nvidia lost a huge $593 billion in market value on Monday, which is the biggest one-day loss for any company on Wall Street.
