OpenAI has launched a new tool called “Operator.” It’s a digital helper that can do tasks on a computer just like a human. This tool can use the mouse and keyboard to perform actions, like filling out forms, going on websites, or doing different jobs without needing special codes or instructions.

Here’s how it works: The tool first looks at the screen to understand what’s going on. Then it plans what to do, like deciding where to click or what to type. After that, it completes the task by using a virtual mouse and keyboard.
For example, if you ask it to fill out an online form, it will look at the form, know where to enter the details, and type in the right information. If something goes wrong, it will try another way to finish the job.
What makes Operator different is that it doesn’t rely on hard codes to do tasks. It works directly with the things you see on the screen, making it more flexible. This allows it to do many types of tasks on various websites and apps.
The tool is careful when dealing with sensitive actions. For example, if it needs to enter a password or make a payment, it will stop and ask for your permission before proceeding.
Operator is a major step forward because it can do things without needing complicated codes. It is more adaptable and can help with many tasks. Tests have shown it can complete tasks, like shopping online or managing accounts, with good results. However, for more complex tasks, like running a full computer system, it still needs improvement.
To make sure Operator is safe, it avoids dangerous websites and asks for your approval before taking big actions like sending emails or making purchases. It also checks for harmful actions, like phishing scams.
Currently, only a small group of people in the United States is testing Operator. OpenAI is collecting feedback to make the tool better. In the future, they plan to make it available for more people and allow others to create their own helpers using the same technology.
Though it's still new, Operator shows how technology can be like a helpful assistant that can make using a computer easier.
