The sudden death of businessman Sunjay Kapur on June 12, 2025, in the United Kingdom has brought his family and personal life back into the news. As legal battles begin over his massive empire worth around Rs 30,000 crore, many are wondering who will get a share. While his second wife, Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor, and his third wife, Priya Sachdev, are both involved in the inheritance issue, his first wife, Nandita Mahtani, remains away from the fight.
Who Is Nandita Mahtani?
Nandita Mahtani is a well-known fashion designer and stylist. She has designed clothes for many Bollywood stars like Virat Kohli, Katrina Kaif, Shilpa Shetty, Gauri Khan, and others. She comes from a successful business family. Her parents are Manu and Indu Mahtani, and her brother Bharat Mahtani is also a businessman.
She started her fashion journey in 1998 and launched her label "Ananya" in 2000 with her sister Anu Hinduja. Later, she launched her own brand, "Nandita Mahtani," with stores in Mumbai, Goa, and London. In 2017, she teamed up with Dolly Sidhwani and Bhavana Pandey to launch a fashion label called "Love Generation."
She also created a clothing line with cartoon themes in 2019 in partnership with Cartoon Network. This shows her creativity and ability to try new ideas in the fashion world.
Marriage to Sunjay Kapur
Nandita Mahtani met Sunjay Kapur in London, and they got married in 1996. Their wedding was a grand celebration. However, their marriage did not last long, and they separated in 2000. They did not have any children together. This is one reason why Nandita is not part of the current inheritance battle over Sunjay Kapur’s wealth.
After their divorce, Sunjay married Karisma Kapoor in 2003. Karisma and Sunjay had two children, Samaira and Kiaan. That marriage also ended in 2014. Later, Sunjay married Priya Sachdev, and they had a son named Azarius. Sunjay also adopted Priya's daughter Safira from her previous marriage.
Nandita's Personal Life After Divorce
After her divorce from Sunjay Kapur, Nandita dated actor Dino Morea for a while. They also co-founded a fashion brand together called Playground. For some time, there were rumors about her dating actor Ranbir Kapoor. Ranbir once said in an interview that he had a crush on Nandita when he was younger. However, nothing serious was confirmed between them.
In 2021, Nandita got engaged to Bollywood actor Vidyut Jammwal. The couple got engaged at the Taj Mahal, and they shared their pictures online. However, they broke up in 2023 and called off their engagement.
Keeping Away from the Inheritance Drama
Despite the recent media attention on Sunjay Kapur’s death and the legal fight over his wealth, Nandita Mahtani has chosen to stay away from the drama. Since she and Sunjay did not have children, and they separated over two decades ago, she is not a part of the current family conflict.
On June 22, Nandita reacted to an emotional post made by Sunjay’s sister Mandhira Kapur Smith. Her quiet and respectful response shows that she has moved on from that part of her life.
Nandita Mahtani is a strong and talented woman who has built a name for herself in the fashion world. While her past marriage to Sunjay Kapur brings her name into the news again, she has kept her focus on her career and personal growth. As the Kapur family continues to deal with their legal matters, Nandita stands as an example of grace, staying away from the fight and living her life on her own terms.
