In a pivotal move announced on April 8, 2026, in Repentigny by Joël Lightbound, the Government of Canada is set to inject $1.4 billion to bolster its ammunition production. This investment aims to reinforce national security and lessen dependence on foreign supply chains.

This funding aligns with the Canadian Defence Industry Resilience (CDIR) Program, designed to foster a robust and self-sufficient defence sector in Canada. The initiative will focus on enhancing manufacturing capabilities, securing supply chain efficiency, and promoting the domestic production of vital defence materials.

A major portion of this investment will benefit General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems located in Quebec. The firm is tasked with developing new and upgraded facilities aimed at boosting ammunition production. These endeavors include constructing a facility for nitrocellulose production and assembling and packaging plants for artillery charges and high-explosive projectiles used in modern military applications.

This investment will also restore Canada’s domestic nitrocellulose production capabilities, crucial for ammunition manufacturing. By reviving this ability, the government seeks to fortify supply chain resilience and guarantee continued access to essential materials in times of heightened demand.

Moreover, additional support is directed towards IMT Precision in Ingersoll. This funding will facilitate the establishment of a new production facility for metal shells used in advanced artillery projectiles, further enhancing Canada’s manufacturing capabilities.

Officials anticipate that these projects will generate over 350 jobs during both the construction phase and through subsequent indirect employment opportunities opportunities. Additionally, the initiatives are set to promote innovation, foster partnerships with educational institutions, and attract further investments in the defence sector.

The initiative supports Canada’s broader Defence Industrial Strategy, emphasizing security, sovereignty, and economic prosperity. By increasing local production capabilities, the government seeks to ensure the Canadian Armed Forces have unfettered access to vital equipment while propelling economic advancement.

Ultimately, this investment underscores Canada’s dedication to cultivating a resilient defence industry, enhancing national security, and creating quality job opportunities. It also highlights the importance of developing local resources to meet evolving defence requirements in a complex global landscape.
