On a quiet Monday afternoon in Montana, a terrifying event unfolded at the Kalispell City Airport. At about 2:00 p.m., a small aircraft carrying four people crashed into a parked plane, causing a massive fire. Fortunately, despite the intensity of the incident, no one suffered serious injuries.

The Aircraft Involved

The plane that crashed was a Socata TBM 700, a single-engine turboprop aircraft. This type of plane is known for being fast, comfortable, and often used for private or business travel. According to aviation records, the aircraft was built in 2011 and is registered to Meter Sky LLC, a company based in Pullman, Washington.

The other aircraft involved in the crash was parked at the time and did not have anyone onboard. This second plane, along with nearby grass and airport property, was damaged when the fire spread.

How the Incident Happened

Witnesses and authorities explained that the small plane was attempting to land at the airport. The aircraft approached from the south end of the runway. As it touched down, something went wrong, and the plane crash-landed near the end of the runway.

The momentum of the crash carried it forward, and it collided directly with another aircraft that was parked nearby. The collision caused both planes to be severely damaged, and within moments, a fire erupted.

Kalispell Fire Chief Jay Hagen shared that the fire was intense and quickly spread to the grassy area near the runway. Firefighters responded immediately to prevent it from spreading further. Several aircraft in the area were affected by heat and smoke from the fire.

The Fire and Rescue Efforts

The fire that broke out after the collision was large enough to send thick black smoke high into the sky, making it visible from a distance. This caused concern for people in the surrounding areas who could see the dark plume.

Firefighters and airport emergency crews acted fast to contain the flames. They managed to bring the fire under control before it could cause even greater damage to other aircraft and buildings.

The quick response of emergency teams was key in ensuring that the situation did not escalate into a larger disaster.

The Passengers and Injuries

There were four people onboard the Socata TBM 700 — the pilot and three passengers. When the crash happened, the impact caused the plane to catch fire almost immediately. Despite the danger, all four people managed to escape from the burning aircraft before the flames spread.

Two of the passengers suffered minor injuries during the crash and escape. They were treated by medical staff at the airport and did not require hospitalization. The pilot and the other passenger were unharmed.

Authorities confirmed that no one on the ground was injured, and no lives were lost in this incident.

Eyewitness Accounts

People who were nearby at the time described the terrifying scene. One witness, who works at a nearby inn, said they first heard a loud, deep sound, “like someone hitting a bass drum very hard.” When they looked outside, they saw the plane crash and smoke billowing from the scene.

Witnesses also reported seeing the plane coming in at a low angle before it touched down hard on the runway, slid forward, and smashed into the parked aircraft. The explosion of flames that followed was immediate and intense.

Location of the Incident

The crash took place at Kalispell City Airport, a small city-owned airport located just south of Kalispell, Montana. Kalispell is a northwestern Montana city with a population of around 30,000 people. The airport serves as a base for small planes, private flights, and some business aircraft.

Because the airport is not as large as major international airports, incidents like this are rare. However, the crash caused significant damage to at least two planes and temporarily disrupted airport activity.

Investigation Underway

Authorities, including the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), are investigating the cause of the crash. Investigators will look into multiple factors, such as weather conditions, pilot actions, and the technical condition of the aircraft before landing.

The FAA has confirmed that the Socata TBM 700 involved in the crash is registered to Meter Sky LLC, but the company has not released any statement about the incident yet.

Aftermath and Cleanup

Once the fire was extinguished, airport staff began the process of clearing the damaged planes and inspecting the runway for safety. The runway had to be closed for a short time while debris was removed.

The damage to both aircraft appears to be severe, with the Socata TBM 700 heavily burned and the parked plane significantly damaged from both the impact and fire.

Safety Measures in Place

While plane crashes are rare, small airports like Kalispell City Airport are equipped with emergency response plans to deal with such incidents. Monday’s quick reaction from the fire department, airport staff, and other responders is being credited with preventing the fire from spreading to more planes or airport buildings.

Community Reaction

The local community has expressed relief that no one was seriously hurt in the crash. Many people in Kalispell saw the smoke and feared the worst. Social media posts from residents showed pictures and videos of the fire from different parts of the city.

Some residents have also raised questions about whether additional safety measures could be put in place to prevent similar incidents in the future, such as longer runways, better crash barriers, or more advanced landing systems.

A small aircraft crash at Kalispell City Airport in Montana turned into a major fire but thankfully did not result in serious injuries. The Socata TBM 700 was carrying four people when it attempted to land and struck a parked plane. Firefighters quickly brought the fire under control, and an investigation is ongoing to determine the cause.
