In a landmark ruling, a California jury has ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay $966 million to the family of Mae Moore, who blamed her cancer on life-long use of the company’s baby powder. The verdict marks the largest single-user award in the 15-year litigation saga over talc-based products.
Moore, who passed away in 2021 at age 88, was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a rare cancer linked to asbestos exposure. The jury awarded $16 million in compensatory damages and an astonishing $950 million in punitive damages, citing J&J’s alleged efforts to hide the health risks of its iconic powders.
Decades-Long Legal Battle
This case adds to a growing list of lawsuits against J&J, which withdrew talc-based baby powder from the global market in 2023. Despite spending over $3 billion to settle similar claims, the company still faces more than 70,000 active cases, many alleging mesothelioma and ovarian cancer linked to talc use.

Plaintiffs have pointed to internal company documents suggesting J&J was aware of asbestos in its talc as early as the 1970s. Jurors found that the company intentionally misled consumers, failing to disclose the risks associated with products like Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower, the latter sold to Valeant Pharmaceuticals in 2012.
Historical Context of J&J Talc Cases
Previous high-profile cases against J&J have resulted in billions in verdicts, though many have been reduced or overturned on appeal. Notably, a 2018 Missouri jury awarded $4.7 billion to 20 women, later cut to $2.1 billion, with J&J ultimately paying $2.5 billion with interest.
Legal experts anticipate that Moore’s award may also face reductions. US Supreme Court guidelines suggest punitive damages exceeding 10 times compensatory damages could be deemed excessive, potentially lowering the $950 million punitive portion.
Life-Long Use and Jury Findings
Moore reportedly used J&J’s powders for around 80 years, combining Baby Powder with Shower-to-Shower. The jury concluded that J&J’s conduct demonstrated intentional deception, failing to warn her about cancer risks while continuing to market these products for decades.
With a new wave of talc trials on the horizon, this verdict underscores the continuing scrutiny over one of the most recognized consumer products in history, leaving a lasting impact on corporate accountability in the healthcare and cosmetics sectors.
