TikTok and its parent company ByteDance have asked the US Supreme Court to stop a new law that will ban the app from working in the United States. This move is an effort to keep TikTok active for more than 170 million US users.

The company wants the Supreme Court to delay the ban by January 6 while they decide if they will hear TikTok’s appeal. The law would stop TikTok on January 19 unless ByteDance sells the company. If the Supreme Court doesn’t act, the ban will go into effect the day before Donald Trump becomes President-elect.
TikTok argues that the ban would be unfair and harm the public, especially as the new administration may change its position on this law. Trump has shown a softer attitude toward TikTok, saying he has “a warm spot” for the app. He believes TikTok’s success helped Republicans win support from young voters.
The new law does not force people to delete TikTok. However, it would prevent companies that help TikTok, such as Oracle Corp., from providing support to the app. TikTok believes the law violates the First Amendment, which protects the freedom of speech in the United States. Despite this, a US appeals court ruled against TikTok, saying the law is necessary to protect the country’s safety from threats linked to foreign nations like China.
TikTok has once again asked the Supreme Court to stop the ban from starting. A group of content creators has also joined TikTok in asking the Supreme Court to delay the ban. They say the law would hurt their ability to share content and connect with their audience.
Lawmakers say the law is needed to stop China from using TikTok to spy on American users and spread false information. However, the US government has not provided clear evidence that TikTok has harmed American users or misused data.
TikTok has grown to become one of the most popular apps in the United States, with many users using it for fun, news, and even business. A study by Pew Research found that about 17% of adults in the US now regularly get news from TikTok, a big increase from 2020.
The Supreme Court will decide whether they will stop this new law while the legal battle continues. The cases are TikTok v. Garland and Firebaugh v. Garland. This issue shows how technology, freedom, and national security are connected in modern times.
