A powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake shook Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara province early Monday, sparking concern across the region but causing no reported damage or casualties. According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake struck at 00:04 a.m. Jakarta time, with its epicenter 82 km northwest of North Central Timor Regency and a depth of 75 km.
The Indonesia earthquake was strong enough to be felt by residents, yet authorities confirmed there was no tsunami potential following the tremors. Locals described a brief but noticeable shaking that caused concern but did not lead to panic. “The tremors were felt by residents here but did not trigger panic. So far, there have been no reports of damage or casualties. We continue to monitor potential risks,” said Gasper Losa Manisa, head of the East Nusa Tenggara Disaster Management Agency.
The BMKG recorded the coordinates of the earthquake’s epicenter at 9.06 degrees south latitude and 123.97 degrees east longitude. Experts have reassured the public that while aftershocks may occur, there is no immediate threat of larger seismic activity.
Disaster response teams remain on alert to assess any hidden structural damages or injuries that may surface later. The Indonesia earthquake serves as a reminder of the nation’s vulnerability to frequent seismic events, given its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world’s most active earthquake zones.
Authorities have urged residents to stay calm but vigilant, keeping emergency supplies ready in case of future tremors. The Indonesia 6.3 earthquake has once again brought attention to the importance of disaster preparedness and early warning systems in earthquake-prone regions.
