Aging is a natural part of life that every human experiences. Yet in recent years, some scientists have argued that aging should be officially labeled as a disease. They believe this would bring more research, more funding and better medical attention. But many experts strongly disagree and warn that calling aging a disease could create more harm in society.

The debate became global in 2018 when the World Health Organization added a category called “old age” to its International Classification of Diseases. People around the world reacted with anger and worry. They said older people are not sick just because they are older. After huge backlash, the WHO removed the term in 2021 and replaced it with “ageing-associated declines in intrinsic capacities,” which is a more neutral and respectful phrase.

Some scientists still argue that aging should be treated like a disease because the body changes over time. As people grow older, they have a higher chance of developing cancer, heart disease and high blood pressure. They say studying aging as a disease can help create new treatments and reduce age-related illnesses.

But many experts say this approach is too limited. They explain that calling aging a disease sends the wrong message. It suggests that older people are weak or broken and need to be “fixed.” This kind of language can increase stigma and make older adults feel unwanted or unhealthy even when they are living normal, active lives.

Specialists also remind us that aging is not only about physical decline. It is also a period of emotional growth, wisdom and stability. Many older people report feeling happier, more confident and better at handling life’s problems. These positive parts of aging are lost when society focuses only on disease.

Experts warn that labeling aging as a disease can strengthen ageist attitudes. It might also encourage people to fear getting older or chase unrealistic ideas of staying young forever. Instead, experts say society should respect aging as a normal life process. Health systems should support older people without treating natural aging like a medical problem.
