The final round of Concacaf World Cup qualifiers on Tuesday could see history made, as small nations Curacao, Haiti, and Suriname compete for places at the 2026 World Cup. While larger countries such as Costa Rica, Honduras, Jamaica, and Panama are also in contention, the focus is on the potential achievements of these underdog teams. The expanded 48-team 2026 World Cup will allow three automatic berths for the region, with the two best-ranked runners-up entering inter-confederation playoffs to compete for two additional spots.

Curacao, a self-governing Dutch territory with just over 150,000 residents, could become the smallest country ever to qualify for a World Cup if they avoid defeat against Jamaica. Curacao has climbed to the top of Group B after a 7-0 win over Bermuda and a favorable draw for Jamaica against Trinidad and Tobago. The team, composed largely of Dutch-based professionals with Antillean roots, has been guided by veteran coach Dick Advocaat, who, however, will miss the crucial match due to family reasons. Interim coach Steve McClaren said the team aims to bring positivity to fans despite the challenges and to capitalize on Jamaica’s recent hurricane-related difficulties.

Suriname, with a population of about 650,000, also has a strong chance to secure a first-ever World Cup berth. They conclude their Group A campaign against already-eliminated Guatemala. Suriname has a superior goal difference compared to Panama, making a win likely to secure qualification. Like Curacao, Suriname has benefited from Dutch connections, drawing players from the Netherlands to strengthen their squad. Coach Stanley Menzo, a former Dutch goalkeeper, expressed satisfaction with the team’s progress and potential.

Haiti’s possible qualification would be one of football’s greatest fairytales. The Caribbean nation last appeared at the World Cup in 1974, conceding 14 goals in three games. Gang violence in Port-au-Prince has left much of the capital unsafe, forcing Haiti to play their home qualifiers in Curacao. Despite these challenges, a 1-0 win against Costa Rica has given Haiti a golden opportunity to qualify, depending on results from Honduras’ final game. Their match against bottom-ranked Nicaragua in Willemstad could secure a historic return to the World Cup for the island nation.

The final matches for all six Concacaf qualifying groups will be played simultaneously, ensuring a dramatic finish to the qualification campaign. Fans and teams alike await the outcomes that could see some of the smallest and most troubled nations achieve a place on football’s biggest stage. These potential achievements not only highlight sporting excellence but also symbolize hope and pride for countries facing economic, social, and political challenges.

With historic first-time qualifications within reach for Curacao, Suriname, and Haiti, the final day of Concacaf qualifiers promises to be filled with tension, excitement, and the possibility of underdog success stories that will be remembered for years to come.
