Former Chelsea midfielder Oscar has been discharged from the hospital after spending five days under medical care for cardiac issues, his club Sao Paulo confirmed on Sunday. The 34-year-old Brazilian footballer experienced heart complications during pre-season tests earlier this week, prompting immediate attention from club staff and a medical team from Einstein Hospital Israelita.
Oscar’s health scare occurred on Tuesday when preliminary evaluations detected cardiac alterations. The situation was promptly assessed by Sao Paulo’s medical team, ensuring the player received rapid and professional care. Following thorough tests and extensive monitoring, doctors diagnosed Oscar with vasovagal syncope, a condition that causes fainting due to a sudden drop in heart rate and blood pressure. While the condition can be alarming, it is generally considered manageable with proper care and rest.
In a statement, Sao Paulo emphasized that Oscar remained stable and clinically well throughout his hospital stay. The club also confirmed that the player will now follow a medical program involving rest and monitoring over the next few days to ensure full recovery. The statement read: “Stable and clinically well throughout the entire hospitalization period, the athlete will now follow a medical program of rest for the next few days.”
Oscar has enjoyed a distinguished football career. He won the English Premier League twice with Chelsea and lifted the Chinese Super League title three times while playing for Shanghai Port. The midfielder returned to Brazil in December last year, signing a three-year contract with Sao Paulo, the club where he began his youth career. His return was seen as a homecoming for the talented midfielder, who has long been admired for his vision, passing ability, and goal-scoring skills.
The football world has expressed relief at news of Oscar’s recovery, with fans and fellow professionals sending messages of support during his hospitalization. Cardiac issues are taken seriously in professional sports, and clubs prioritize the health and safety of their players. In Oscar’s case, prompt medical intervention and careful monitoring allowed him to leave the hospital in good condition, highlighting the importance of timely medical care in professional athletics.
Oscar’s management and Sao Paulo have stressed that his return to training and competitive football will be gradual, following medical advice. The club remains committed to supporting him throughout his recovery and ensuring that he can resume his playing career safely.
As he continues his rest and rehabilitation, fans eagerly await his return to the field, hoping to see the former Chelsea and Shanghai Port star back in action with the team that nurtured his early footballing talent. Oscar’s story also serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of health issues, even for elite athletes, and the critical role of medical vigilance in professional sports.
