Team India captain Shubman Gill is currently recovering from a neck injury at the team hotel in Kolkata after being discharged from the hospital. The right-handed batter suffered a neck spasm during the first innings of the opening Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens. Gill faced just three balls before walking off the field wearing a cervical collar as a precaution. The injury forced him to retire hurt, and he did not return for the remainder of the match.
Gill was later admitted to Woodlands Hospital in Kolkata for scans and an MRI to determine the severity of the injury. He was discharged the following day and is now under close observation by the BCCI medical team. His recovery is progressing, but his participation in the second Test, scheduled in Guwahati at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium from November 22, remains uncertain. The team management has described his chances as a “50–50 call,” with a final decision expected in the coming days.
During Gill’s absence, vice-captain Rishabh Pant led the Indian team for the remainder of the first Test. India struggled in the batting department without their captain, chasing a modest total of 124 on a difficult pitch. The Men in Blue could only manage 93 runs, giving South Africa a 1-0 lead in the series. The team found it challenging to build partnerships, highlighting Gill’s importance to the batting lineup.
The Indian squad remains in Kolkata following the first Test, with an optional training session scheduled at Eden Gardens ahead of their departure to Guwahati. According to reports, Gill may travel with the team on Wednesday, but if he is not ready in time, he could travel on Thursday. The BCCI medical staff is closely monitoring his progress and advising rest to ensure full recovery.
Gill’s potential absence in the second Test would mean India will rely on Rishabh Pant to lead the side, with the team needing to adapt quickly to the challenges of playing without their captain. The Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati will host the second Test starting Saturday, November 22, and Team India hopes to have Gill fit to strengthen their chances of leveling the series.
The BCCI continues to emphasize caution in managing Gill’s recovery. Neck injuries are sensitive, and rushing the player back could risk further complications. The coaching and medical teams are working together to ensure that Gill returns to full fitness before taking the field again.
Shubman Gill, 26, has been a key player for India in all formats. His presence at the top of the order adds stability and experience to the batting lineup. Fans and teammates alike will be watching closely as he recovers, hoping that he can rejoin the squad for the crucial second Test.
The team management and medical staff remain optimistic but cautious, keeping the player’s long-term health as a priority. His recovery and participation in Guwahati will play a significant role in India’s performance in the ongoing series against South Africa.
