Norway has secured its first World Cup appearance since 1998, with striker Erling Haaland playing a central role in the team’s success. The 25-year-old Manchester City forward scored twice in Norway’s 4-1 win over Italy at the San Siro stadium, completing a remarkable qualifying campaign that has seen him net 16 goals. This is double the number scored by any other European player in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Haaland’s impressive goal tally includes five goals in Norway’s 11-1 victory over Moldova and at least one goal in each of Norway’s eight qualifying matches. His scoring form has been widely praised, placing him ahead of England captain Harry Kane, Netherlands forward Memphis Depay, and Austria’s Marko Arnautovic, who all have eight goals apiece.

Following the victory against Italy, Haaland expressed pride in the team’s achievement. “It was absolutely crazy. I’m proud and this is absolutely fantastic. The fact that we can come here and win 4-1 shows that we are a bit unpredictable,” he said. His Norway manager, Stale Solbakken, also highlighted Haaland’s extraordinary impact, calling him “a goal machine” and praising his performance even in front of the Italian fans, who applauded him despite their team losing.

Haaland’s influence goes beyond scoring goals. Standing at six-foot-five, he combines power and precision, making him one of the most feared forwards in world football. His leadership was also evident during Norway’s 4-1 win over Estonia, where he delivered an emotional halftime speech to motivate his teammates. Haaland’s personality and dedication have earned him admiration in Norway, a country with a population of less than six million. His hometown of Bryne has several murals in his honor, and a three-metre tall wooden statue of him, although stolen in 2022, shows the impact he has on the community.

For Haaland, qualifying for the World Cup is not just a personal milestone but also a significant achievement for Norwegian football. “We have broken codes and become better individual players,” he said, noting the development of young talents like Antonio Nusa and Oscar Bobb, both of whom have started matches for Manchester City. “It’s important to pinch yourself, for the small nation we are. I feel like this is the start of something big. It’s just important to enjoy the moment.”

As Norway prepares for the 2026 World Cup in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, Haaland will be at the heart of the team’s ambitions. His scoring ability, leadership qualities, and inspiring presence make him a key figure in Norway’s campaign, and the country’s fans are eagerly anticipating their team’s performance on the world stage. Beyond his athletic talent, Haaland’s charisma and commitment to his teammates have made him a beloved figure both at home and internationally, promising an exciting journey for Norway in the upcoming tournament.
