Abu Dhabi has taken a decisive step to secure the future of its marine resources with the launch of a new Sustainable Fisheries Policy. Issued under Decree No. (8) of 2025 by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, this policy marks a major milestone in the emirate’s commitment to protecting its waters while supporting the fishing sector.
The policy aims to ensure long-term sustainability of fish stocks, enhance economic and social benefits, and foster scientific research and innovation in fisheries management. It comes amid positive signs of fish stock recovery, a result of EAD’s ongoing regulatory efforts to balance ecological preservation with the needs of the fishing community.
Key pillars of the policy include scientific management of fisheries, strengthened monitoring programs, development of fishing-related legislation, and support for sustainable aquaculture. It also emphasizes the rehabilitation of natural habitats, including coral reefs and mangroves, ensuring that local ecosystems remain resilient in the face of environmental challenges.
Importantly, the policy prioritizes the empowerment of local fishermen by promoting sustainable fishing practices and raising awareness about the responsible use of marine resources. Through this approach, Abu Dhabi aims to protect native species from overfishing, safeguard biodiversity, and maintain healthy marine food chains, while supporting the sector’s contribution to food security and economic growth.
By combining regulatory oversight, community engagement, and environmental stewardship, Abu Dhabi’s Sustainable Fisheries Policy sets a comprehensive framework to ensure that the emirate’s marine heritage remains a vital resource for generations to come.
