The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) is working hard to build strong global partnerships to protect the environment. As part of this effort, a team from EAD, led by Her Excellency Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD, visited Japan on a special mission. During the visit, Dr. Shaikha and her team met with the Governor of Tokyo, Yuriko Koike, to discuss ways to work together on climate change and sustainability. They also connected with important public and private organizations in Japan to explore new opportunities for cooperation.

While in Japan, the EAD delegation took part in high-level discussions with top experts in climate adaptation, water conservation, and waste management. The visit was a key part of EAD’s long-term plan to learn from the world’s best environmental practices. By adopting these strategies, EAD aims to improve its environmental efforts in Abu Dhabi.
Dr. Shaikha shared her thoughts on the trip, saying, "Our visit to Japan was very productive. We gained deep insights from leading sustainability experts. We learned a lot about waste reduction, climate change solutions, biotechnology, and marine water conservation. These lessons will help us introduce new and effective solutions in Abu Dhabi. Our goal is to ensure a cleaner and more sustainable environment for future generations. International partnerships like this are very important, as they allow us to exchange knowledge and adopt best practices to strengthen EAD’s credibility and enhance our environmental efforts."
One of the main areas of focus during the visit was Japan’s use of digital technology in government services and its world-famous waste management systems. Japan is recognized worldwide for its advanced environmental practices, particularly in reducing waste and cutting emissions. The country has committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2050 through its Green Growth Strategy, highlighting its strong dedication to sustainability.
The EAD delegation was especially interested in Japan’s nature-based solutions (NbS) for protecting the environment. These include restoring wetlands and mangroves to prevent damage from natural disasters such as waves, storm surges, and coastal erosion.
This visit was part of EAD’s larger plan to engage with international stakeholders and improve its climate strategies. By learning from leading countries, EAD is committed to applying the best global practices to develop innovative and sustainable environmental solutions in Abu Dhabi.
This visit follows an important milestone in UAE-Japan relations last year when Governor Koike visited Abu Dhabi. During her trip, she explored Abu Dhabi’s Falcon Hospital and Jubail Mangrove Park. She praised EAD’s work in protecting mangroves, recognizing the agency’s commitment to environmental conservation.
By continuing to build strong international partnerships, EAD is working towards a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for Abu Dhabi and beyond.
