In a major leap toward future transport, Dubai’s Roads & Transport Authority (RTA), in partnership with Cruise (General Motors), has launched a pilot operation for driverless taxis in the Jumeirah 1 district. The trial covers an 8 km corridor stretching from the Etihad Museum to the Dubai Water Canal, with extensive digital mapping already completed .
The pilot—operational since late 2023—deploys electric Cruise Chevrolet Bolt vehicles equipped with LIDAR, radar, and cameras. Demonstrations featured Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed al Maktoum, alongside Dubai Police and RTA leadership, offering public glimpses into hands‑off autonomous rides.
Although public access remains limited, selected individuals are expected to ride these taxis later this year, ahead of a planned commercial roll-out in 2024. The initiative aligns with Dubai’s Smart Self‑Driving Transport Strategy, which aims to convert 25% of journeys—approximately 4,000 taxis—to autonomous vehicles by 2030.

Dubai has also enacted a supportive regulatory framework: Cruise received the RTA’s first exclusive testing permit in the UAE, backed by Cabinet-level support from Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. New laws now empower authorities to license, monitor, and regulate self-driving vehicle operations under defined safety and licensing conditions.
During mapping, Cruise test units captured precise details of streets, signs, pedestrian crossings, and road markings. These data inform the taxi software’s navigation decisions, ensuring readiness for increasing complexity within urban traffic environments.
Built on the Bolt platform, these electric taxis seat up to three passengers. Fare details are still being determined, although early signals suggest pricing may be roughly 30% higher than standard cabs—similar to existing limo fares in Dubai.
The pilot extends beyond taxis. In Abu Dhabi, WeRide has secured a national Level 4 self-driving license, enabling tests for robotaxis, bus shuttles, delivery vans, and sanitation vehicles with zero human intervention. Dubai plans to follow suit as AV platforms scale citywide.
Experts underscore that Dubai offers ideal conditions for AV deployment—flat, well-maintained roads, consistent climate, and coordinated governance. The city’s vision for autonomous mobility includes integration with urban systems like traffic control, EV charging, and logistics planning.
Pilot expansion is expected across other urban zones within the emirate, with ongoing efforts to onboard more vehicles, scale public access, and refine safety protocols. Anticipated next steps include calibrating commercial fare models, testing ride-hailing app integration, and gathering user feedback during limited public operation.
