A deadly crash involving two buses and two other vehicles occurred early Wednesday on a highway in western Uganda, claiming the lives of at least 46 people, police reported. The tragic incident, one of the worst road accidents in Uganda in recent years, initially had a higher death toll, with police first reporting 63 fatalities before revising the number after confirming that several people found unconscious at the scene were alive. The Uganda road accident highlights the dangers of reckless driving and poor road safety enforcement in the region.
Police investigations revealed that the crash happened near Kiryandongo, on the highway to Gulu, a major northern city. The two buses, traveling in opposite directions, attempted to overtake other vehicles and collided head-on, causing massive destruction. Witnesses and first responders reported victims bleeding and with broken limbs, describing the scene as gruesome. The road accident in Uganda underscores how dangerous overtaking and speeding remain on narrow East African highways.
Fatal road accidents are common in Uganda and the wider East African region, often attributed to speeding, careless overtaking, and poor infrastructure. In August, a bus carrying mourners in southwestern Kenya overturned, killing 25 people and injuring many others. According to the Red Cross, the magnitude of the latest Uganda road accident is uncommonly high, and emergency response is often hampered at night when fewer bystanders are present to assist victims.
Most of the injured from the Kiryandongo crash are receiving treatment at a nearby government hospital. Uganda has seen a worrying rise in road fatalities, with 5,144 people killed in 2024, up from 4,806 in 2023 and 4,534 in 2022, according to police statistics. Careless overtaking and speeding accounted for 44.5 percent of all road crashes in 2024. The latest Uganda road accident serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need for stronger traffic law enforcement and road safety measures.
Road safety campaigners emphasize the need for public awareness and strict enforcement of traffic rules, especially for heavy vehicles traveling at night. Joseph Beyanga, a longtime road safety advocate in Uganda, said the Kiryandongo crash shows how far the country still has to go to prevent deadly road accidents in Uganda. He organizes awareness campaigns and memorial walks, including a 60 km walk planned for November, to honor those killed or maimed in traffic accidents over the years.
As investigations continue into the Kiryandongo crash, Ugandan authorities have urged motorists to exercise maximum caution on the roads and avoid dangerous overtaking maneuvers. The tragic Uganda road accident is a stark reminder that improved infrastructure, enforcement, and driver education remain critical to reducing fatalities and injuries on the nation’s highways.
