Ajay Devgn’s much-anticipated sequel, De De Pyaar De 2, hit theatres on Friday, reuniting him with Rakul Preet Singh, alongside R. Madhavan and Meezaan Jafri in pivotal roles. The film, directed by Anshul Sharma and penned by Luv Ranjan and Tarun Jain, has drawn a mixed response during its opening day at the box office.
Early estimates suggest that De De Pyaar De 2 collected approximately Rs 8.5 crore on its first day. While this is slightly below the Rs 9.11 crore opening of the original 2019 film, it still managed to surpass another recent Devgn sequel, Son of Sardaar 2, which had begun its run with Rs 7.5 crore. The original Son of Sardaar (2012) had opened stronger at Rs 10.7 crore, highlighting the varied performance of sequels in Devgn’s recent filmography.
Among Devgn’s 2024 releases, Raid 2 remains the highest opener. The film, directed by Raj Kumar Gupta and co-starring Riteish Deshmukh, had collected Rs 19.25 crore on day one — nearly double the Rs 10.04 crore debut of the original Raid.
In addition to Devgn and Rakul Preet Singh, De De Pyaar De 2 features a supporting cast that includes Javed Jaafery, Meezaan Jafri, Ishita Dutta, and Gautami Kapoor. Devgn and Madhavan, who were last seen together in Vikas Bahl’s Shaitaan, had previously delivered a major hit, opening at Rs 14.75 crore and ultimately earning Rs 147 crore domestically. The sequel was released across more than 5,100 shows nationwide, aiming to replicate the charm of its predecessor while catering to a wider audience.
While the film’s opening day numbers suggest a lukewarm start, the performance over the weekend and subsequent weekdays will determine whether De De Pyaar De 2 can achieve sustained box office success. With its ensemble cast, engaging storyline, and sequel appeal, the film has potential to attract audiences despite the moderate initial response.
