China has officially opened the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, now recognised as the world’s highest bridge, standing 625 meters above the gorge in Guizhou province. The engineering marvel, inaugurated on September 28, slashes travel time across the canyon from two hours to just two minutes.
Live drone footage showed vehicles making the first official crossing as the bridge’s towering blue structures disappeared into the clouds. The opening ceremony drew local officials, engineers, and onlookers, who described the project as a breakthrough in both transportation and tourism.
The bridge stretches 2,900 meters in length, with a main span of 1,420 meters. It is also equipped with a 207-meter sightseeing elevator, sky cafes, and multiple viewing platforms, transforming it into a major tourist attraction.

Before its inauguration, the structure underwent rigorous safety testing last month. Engineers deployed 96 trucks filled with heavy loads across strategic points of the span, while more than 400 sensors monitored the main cables, towers, and suspenders to detect any structural shifts.
Project manager Wu Zhaoming of Guizhou Transportation Investment Group Co., Ltd. said the team faced numerous challenges, including managing temperature control during large-scale concrete pours, stabilising steep canyon slopes, and mitigating strong winds. Despite these hurdles, construction was completed ahead of schedule.
With this achievement, the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge now holds two records: the world’s highest bridge and the largest-span bridge built in mountainous terrain. It also reinforces China’s dominance in modern bridge engineering, with eight of the world’s top ten tallest bridges located in Guizhou province.
The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge is now open to the public, combining world-class engineering with tourism, and further strengthening China’s reputation for record-breaking infrastructure.
