Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has underscored that education and healthcare will be paramount for Malaysia, amid the ongoing strains of the global energy crisis.
During a gathering with students and alumni in Kuala Kangsar on April 4, Anwar asserted that the government is committed to maintaining high standards in public services and education. He noted that smaller educational and healthcare initiatives would be expedited, while larger projects may require more time.
This promise comes during a period when Malaysia, like many nations globally, is facing escalating fuel prices and economic instability fueled by international conflicts, especially in the Middle East. These issues have disrupted global supply chains and increased energy prices, with adverse effects on local economies.
Anwar remarked that numerous countries are reallocating resources towards security due to geopolitical issues, often at the detriment of educational funding. He cautioned that sidelining education could lead to dire consequences for future generations.
To address the crisis, the Malaysian government has undertaken various initiatives, including working with state leaders to stabilize energy supplies and protect citizens from price surges. The focus remains on controlling inflation and ensuring fuel availability while implementing targeted support measures for public welfare.
Additionally, work-from-home policies for public sector workers will commence in mid-April as a strategy to mitigate national energy consumption and alleviate resource strain.
Despite the challenges, Anwar expressed optimism regarding Malaysia's resilience, affirming that government strategies are grounded in data and seek to harmonize economic stability with public welfare.
He reiterated the necessity of prioritizing investments in education and healthcare, which are crucial for sustained national growth, even amidst global uncertainties.
