Careem, a leading ride-hailing and food delivery service, has made a significant stride toward sustainable urban mobility by announcing the introduction of electric delivery bikes on the roads of Dubai. This eco-friendly initiative, in collaboration with the Roads and Transport Authority of Dubai, aligns with the company's commitment to offering more carbon-neutral transport options and contributing to the UAE's net-zero objectives.

The initial phase of this initiative, slated to be implemented by the end of the month, will see an undisclosed number of electric motorbikes hitting Dubai's streets. Sami Amin, Senior Director of Operations for Careem Bike, expressed the company's ambitious goal of having 1,000 electric bikes operational in the emirate by the conclusion of the following year.

Careem acknowledges the significance of supporting the UAE's net-zero goals and views the adoption of electric delivery bikes as a strategic move to enhance the region's environmental sustainability. Traditionally relying on combustion engine motorbikes for its delivery captains, Careem recognizes the operational costs and environmental impact associated with this approach.

By transitioning to electric bikes, Careem anticipates several benefits. It aims to reduce delivery costs, potentially leading to savings for customers while simultaneously contributing to a lower carbon footprint. The decision aligns with the UAE's broader commitment to environmental conservation, highlighted by its hosting of the Cop28 climate change conference.

In response to the UAE's ambitious climate goals, Dubai recently unveiled plans to achieve a 50% reduction in emissions by 2030. This initiative by Careem complements the country's broader sustainability efforts, supporting the transition to a greener and more eco-conscious transportation landscape.

Sami Amin emphasizes the positive impact the shift to electric bikes will have on reducing operational costs for delivery riders. Careem riders typically bear the cost of fuel, and the adoption of battery-powered bikes is estimated to save them at least 15% per month. Riders will have the option to enroll in a monthly subscription service, providing them with unlimited battery swaps at various stations across Dubai.

This transition also carries positive implications for the well-being of delivery riders. Adam Ridgway, founder of OneMoto, a company that manufactures electric bikes in the UAE, notes that the fluctuating fuel prices have placed a financial burden on riders. By using electric bikes, riders stand to save up to 46% per month, contributing to their economic relief.

The deployment of electric delivery bikes by Careem represents a notable step forward in the pursuit of sustainable and eco-friendly urban mobility solutions. As the UAE continues to focus on achieving its net-zero emissions target by 2050, such initiatives by leading companies like Careem underscore the critical role of the private sector in driving positive environmental change.
