Australia achieved a remarkable six-wicket victory against England in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, thanks to a phenomenal 180-run unbroken partnership between Annabel Sutherland and Ash Gardner. Their dynamic collaboration turned the tides for the defending champions, enabling them to recover from an early batting setback and confidently chase down England’s target. The game unfolded at Holkar Stadium in Indore, showcasing an exhilarating contest between two formidable teams.
The Australian innings got off to a rough start as England’s bowlers made early inroads during the powerplay. Lauren Bell initiated the assault, dismissing Phoebe Litchfield in the first over. Linsey Smith then escalated the tension by claiming the wickets of Georgia Voll and Ellyse Perry, leaving Australia struggling at 68 for four. At that juncture, England seemed poised for an upset.
In dire straits, Ash Gardner and Annabel Sutherland teamed up to stabilize the innings. Their initial approach was cautious, concentrating on rotating the strike and capitalizing on loose deliveries. As their confidence grew, they shifted gears, with Gardner reaching her second century of the tournament, finishing with an impressive 104 not out from just 73 balls, including 16 fours. Sutherland provided stellar support, ending her innings unbeaten on 98 with nine boundaries and a six. Their partnership dramatically altered the course of the match, putting Australia in control.
In the earlier innings, England batted first after Australia won the toss. Openers Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones started confidently, forging a 55-run partnership. They consistently found the boundary, looking comfortable against Australia’s pace attack. However, Annabel Sutherland's introduction proved pivotal, as she dismissed Amy Jones with a delivery that swung back to hit the off stump. This breakthrough allowed Australia to gain the upper hand.
Following Sutherland's wicket, Australia ramped up the pressure. Sophie Molineux removed England captain Heather Knight leg-before-wicket, while Alana King had Nat Sciver-Brunt caught with a clever turn. Though Tammy Beaumont stood firm, scoring 78 runs off 105 balls, her dismissal by Sutherland after a well-judged catch from Georgia Voll curtailed England’s momentum. Despite valiant efforts from Alice Capsey (38) and Charlie Dean (26), England managed only 244 for nine in their 50 overs.
With a target of 245 for victory, Australia faced initial pressure but retained their composure. Both Beth Mooney and Sutherland looked to stabilize the innings before Mooney fell to a sharp catch by Sciver-Brunt. This brought Gardner to the crease, and the dynamics shifted entirely. The partnership of Gardner and Sutherland expertly navigated the chase, rotating the strike and finding boundaries. Their 180-run collaboration not only salvaged the innings but also clinched the win with several overs remaining.
With this victory, Australia maintains their dominant form in the tournament, topping the points table with 11 points from six matches, one of which was abandoned. This marks their fifth win, continuously fortifying their status as favorites for the trophy once again. England stands in third place but has secured a spot in the semi-finals.
Australia will next face South Africa in their final league fixture on October 25, while England will encounter New Zealand the following day. Both teams aim to refine their skills ahead of the semi-finals.
This win against England underscored Australia’s strength and depth as a squad. Despite early setbacks, the seniority of Gardner and Sutherland played a crucial role. Their unbeaten partnership exhibited poise, skill, and teamwork — traits that have positioned Australia as the leading contender in women’s cricket. On the other hand, while early wickets and Beaumont’s innings were advantages for England, consistency in their batting order will be vital as they pursue the title.
