Apple, the world’s most valuable tech company, may be on the verge of a major leadership change. Tim Cook, who has guided Apple to a $4 trillion valuation over the past 14 years, could hand over the reins as early as next year, according to reports. While no official announcement has been made, attention is turning to John Ternus, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, as a possible successor.
From Jobs to Cook: A Historic Era
Cook took over as CEO in 2011 following Steve Jobs’ passing. Under his leadership, Apple has expanded its product lineup, boosted services revenue, and turned wearables like AirPods and the Apple Watch into major growth areas. His tenure has been marked by steady innovation, operational discipline, and a remarkable increase in the company’s market value—from around $350 billion in 2011 to over $4 trillion today.
John Ternus: The Engineer Behind Apple’s Iconic Devices
John Ternus joined Apple in 2001 as a member of the Product Design team, the same year the first iPod debuted. Over the decades, he has overseen the development of iPhones, iPads, Macs, AirPods, and Apple silicon. His leadership in hardware engineering has been instrumental in Apple’s custom chip revolution and the transition of Macs to in-house silicon, moves widely praised for their performance and efficiency gains.
Ternus is known for his meticulous approach, low-profile presence, and deep technical expertise. He embodies Apple’s culture of perfectionism without seeking the spotlight—a contrast to the more public personas of previous executives. If he becomes CEO, he would be only the sixth leader in Apple’s nearly 50-year history and the first to emerge entirely from its modern hardware lineage.
Planning for a Smooth Transition
Reports suggest that Apple has quietly intensified its succession planning, ensuring the company’s operations and stock remain stable when Cook eventually steps down. While the timing of an official announcement remains uncertain, internal discussions highlight a sense of urgency within the board.
The potential leadership shift comes as Apple navigates key transitions, including moves into artificial intelligence, a possible revival of the Apple Car project, and continued growth of the Vision Pro platform. The next CEO will inherit a company that is highly profitable but also facing new challenges in hardware, software, and global markets.
Apple has yet to comment publicly on these reports, and both Cook and Ternus remain focused on their current roles. For now, the tech world watches quietly, knowing that Apple’s next “one more thing” could be not a gadget, but a new CEO shaping the future of the company.
