Accenture has launched a sweeping restructuring initiative centered on artificial intelligence, resulting in the layoff of at least 11,000 employees over the past three months. The company is focusing on reshaping its workforce to align with the growing demand for AI skills while also investing in reskilling programs for employees.
According to CEO Julie Sweet, the company's "number one strategy" is upskilling, but not all staff can be retrained within the compressed timeline. "We are exiting on a compressed timeline, and people where reskilling, based on our experience, is not a viable path for the skills we need," she said. The company plans to provide training on AI systems to help staff adapt to new technological demands, emphasizing that updating skills is part of Accenture’s core competency.
The restructuring follows Accenture’s increasing focus on AI consulting, which generated $2.6 billion in revenue over the last six months. Analysts view the move as a strategic response to AI’s expansion potential within the company.

The layoffs are expected to cost the company around $865 million in severance packages. Following the reductions, Accenture’s global workforce has decreased from 791,000 in May to 779,000 by August this year.
In addition to workforce adjustments, Accenture is implementing a "rapid talent rotation" strategy and plans to divest two of its acquisitions. Chief Financial Officer Angie Park said, "These actions will result in cost savings which will be reinvested in our people and our business."
Accenture sees AI as an expansionary force rather than a threat to employment. Sweet emphasized that AI is now embedded across all of the company’s operations. This trend mirrors moves by other major technology firms, including Microsoft and Meta, which have combined layoffs with targeted AI hiring and reskilling programs to realign their workforce with emerging technologies.
The company’s restructuring underscores the broader industry shift toward AI-driven business models, highlighting the growing importance of technology skills in the global IT sector.
