Abu Dhabi has taken a bold step into the future of urban mobility by introducing the world’s first modular smart vehicles. These innovative vehicles, capable of connecting or detaching based on passenger needs, promise to transform road transport across the emirate.
The announcement came during DRIFTx 2025, part of the inaugural Abu Dhabi Autonomous Systems Week, highlighting the city’s position as a global hub for advanced mobility solutions. Developed by NExT, these vehicles are designed to adapt to real-time operational demands, reducing congestion and lowering carbon emissions without the need for additional infrastructure.
Modular smart vehicles stand out for their flexibility. Multiple units can be connected to accommodate higher passenger volumes or separated for individual use, optimizing traffic flow and offering a practical solution for first- and last-mile transport. By dynamically adjusting to demand, the system aims to enhance road efficiency and promote sustainable mobility.
The pilot operation is set to take place on Yas Island, in partnership with Emirates Driving Company (EDC), Liftango, and Paradigma Innovation Hub. This trial will showcase the vehicles’ real-world capabilities and pave the way for a broader rollout across the city.
Beyond immediate transport benefits, these vehicles are also designed as a foundation for future smart operating systems and autonomous driving technologies, supporting Abu Dhabi’s long-term vision of an integrated, intelligent transport network.
With modular smart vehicles, Abu Dhabi is not just rethinking road transport—it is setting a new global standard for adaptive, sustainable, and efficient urban mobility.
