Roger Mayer, a 69-year-old Australian athlete, captured attention at the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2025, showing remarkable determination and sportsmanship. Competing in the Masters division, Brown Belt, 94kg category, Mayer faced Russian competitor Gasan Dzhamalutdinov, who is twenty years his junior. Despite his age disadvantage, Mayer lost by just one point, finishing the match with a smile and a sense of achievement. He said, “I turned 69 last October, and my opponent was 49 and very strong. But I was happy he couldn’t take me down or submit me. I stayed in the fight until the end and lost by one point. For me, that’s enough to call it a successful experience.”
Mayer described his participation in the Abu Dhabi championship as a long-awaited highlight in his life. He praised the professionalism of the event, the organisation, and the spirit of the athletes. He noted that the welcoming atmosphere and respect among competitors left a strong impression, making the event memorable beyond medals or titles.
A former police officer for 35 years, Mayer discovered jiu-jitsu after retiring. He now trains almost daily near Wollongong, south of Sydney, and has embraced the martial art for its combination of physical and mental challenges. Although he practised martial arts in his youth, he finds jiu-jitsu uniquely rewarding, offering fitness, mental focus, and a sense of personal achievement.
Mayer’s story highlights the value of passion, perseverance, and commitment to sports at any age. While he may not be chasing medals or championships, his participation demonstrates that age is not a barrier to pursuing challenges and finding new purpose in life. His courage and positive attitude serve as inspiration for athletes and enthusiasts, showing that dedication and love for sport can transcend generations.
At the championship, Mayer’s performance was applauded by spectators and fellow athletes alike. He has become an example of determination, proving that motivation and resilience matter more than victories alone. His journey underscores the broader benefits of martial arts, including self-discipline, health, and mental well-being, encouraging others to embrace active lifestyles regardless of age.
Roger Mayer’s presence at the Abu Dhabi Jiu-Jitsu Championship is a celebration of spirit, perseverance, and the enduring appeal of sportsmanship, leaving a lasting mark on the competition and those who witnessed his remarkable performance.
