Steve McClaren has resigned as head coach of Jamaica’s national football team following a goalless draw against Curacao. The result ended Jamaica’s hopes of directly qualifying for next year’s World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Curacao held Jamaica to a 0-0 draw, securing their place in the 2026 World Cup and becoming the smallest nation ever to qualify for the tournament by population. Jamaica needed a win to secure automatic qualification but could not find the net despite hitting the woodwork three times in the second half.

Jamaica finished second in Group B of the CONCACAF qualifiers. They were widely regarded as favourites to qualify directly, but Curacao’s resilient performance left them short of their goal. The team now faces the prospect of the inter-confederation play-offs in March, where they could meet teams such as Iraq and DR Congo for a spot in the 48-team tournament.

Speaking to reporters after the match, McClaren said, “Leading this team has been one of the greatest honours of my career. But football is a results business, and tonight we have fallen short of our goal, which was to qualify from this group.”

He added, “It is the responsibility of the leader to step forward, take accountability, and make decisions in the best interests of the team. After deep reflection and an honest assessment of where we are and where we need to go, I have decided to step down as head coach of the Jamaican national team.”

McClaren concluded, “Sometimes the best thing a leader can do is to recognise when a fresh voice, new energy, and a different perspective is required to move this team forward.”

With McClaren’s resignation, Jamaica faces uncertainty as they prepare for the inter-confederation play-offs in March. While the team still has a chance to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, they must now regroup under new leadership and secure results against strong international opponents.

McClaren, who previously managed England’s national team and several club sides in Europe, brought experience and tactical knowledge to Jamaica. Under his tenure, the team showed competitive performances but ultimately fell short of automatic qualification, highlighting the challenges of international football in CONCACAF.

Jamaica’s football federation will now begin the search for a new head coach to lead the team into the play-offs. The focus will be on building confidence, improving finishing, and developing strategies to compete effectively against the upcoming international opponents. Fans and players alike hope that the next coach can inject new energy and guide Jamaica to secure a place at the 2026 World Cup.

Steve McClaren’s resignation marks a turning point for Jamaica’s national football team. While Curacao celebrates historic qualification, Jamaica must look ahead to the play-offs and the challenge of securing their World Cup spot with fresh leadership and renewed determination.
