England have named a 12-man squad for the opening Ashes Test against Australia in Perth, which will begin on Friday. The squad includes off-spinner Shoaib Bashir along with four frontline pace bowlers, keeping England’s bowling options flexible depending on the pitch conditions.
Bowling Choices and Injuries
Selectors chose Brydon Carse over fast bowler Josh Tongue, while Mark Wood, who suffered an injury scare last week, showed his fitness with a fiery spell in the nets. England officials are likely to make a last-minute decision on whether Wood will play. If selected, he will join Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, and Carse in an all-pace attack expected to challenge Australian batsmen on the lively Perth wicket.
England have not fielded such a strong pace line-up in Australia since the era of John Snow and Bob Willis, who helped England win the 1970-71 series. Each of the four fast bowlers in the squad can reach speeds of 90mph, giving England a major advantage in fast-bowling conditions.
In the batting department, Ollie Pope retains his spot at number three ahead of Jacob Bethell. Other notable selections include Ben Stokes as captain, Harry Brook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, and Jamie Smith. The squad aims to balance experienced campaigners with young talents.
Selectors are keeping their options open between a balanced attack featuring Shoaib Bashir and the four pacers, or an all-out pace assault depending on the condition of the pitch. England’s strategy will be critical for success in Perth, which is known for bounce and pace, often favoring fast bowlers.

Fans are eagerly waiting to see how the lineup performs in the first Test, setting the tone for the rest of the series.
