Roger Federer, one of the greatest tennis players in history, has been elected to the International Tennis Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. The announcement was made by the Hall in Rhode Island on 19th November 2025. Federer, the first man to win 20 Grand Slam singles titles, received enough votes in the player category to secure his place in the Hall’s class of 2026.
Federer described his career as part of a “golden time for tennis” alongside rivals Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Known for his elegance, versatility, and sportsmanship, Federer’s career includes 103 tournament wins and 1,251 singles match victories. He finished five years as the world No.1 in the ATP rankings, holding the top position for 310 weeks, including a record 237 consecutive weeks.
Federer won eight Wimbledon titles, six Australian Opens, five US Opens, and one French Open. His first major title came at Wimbledon in 2003. In 2009, he broke Pete Sampras’ record of 14 major titles by winning a thrilling 16-14 fifth set against Andy Roddick. Federer claimed his 20th and final Grand Slam at the 2018 Australian Open.
Federer also contributed to team and doubles competitions. He led Switzerland to the Davis Cup title in 2014 and won an Olympic doubles gold medal with Stan Wawrinka in 2008. He played his last professional match at Wimbledon in 2021 at nearly 40 years old and officially retired the following year, ending his career with a doubles match alongside Nadal at the Laver Cup, an event he co-founded.
Federer’s style, humility, and professionalism have inspired younger athletes, including current world No.1 Carlos Alcaraz. Alcaraz praised Federer’s elegance on and off the court, saying he took the game to another level and set an example for future generations.
Alongside Federer, Mary Carillo was elected to the Hall of Fame in the contributor category. Carillo, the first woman to regularly commentate on tennis broadcasts, won six Emmy Awards and three Peabody Awards. She has been a prominent voice in tennis media and was previously inducted into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2018.
The induction ceremony for Federer and Carillo will take place in August 2026. Next year’s Hall of Fame ballot will include former players Juan Martin del Potro and Svetlana Kuznetsova, while Serena Williams and Ash Barty will become eligible for induction for the first time.
Roger Federer’s election to the International Tennis Hall of Fame honours not only his incredible achievements on the court but also his lasting impact on tennis worldwide. His skill, sportsmanship, and dedication have left a mark on the sport, inspiring players and fans alike.
