In a groundbreaking event, New York City will witness Zohran Mamdani taking the mayoral oath at midnight, uniquely swearing on the Quran, the holy book of Islam. This momentous occasion signifies the first instance in the city's history where a mayor has utilized a Quran during the swearing-in, emphasizing the city's multicultural fabric and progressive leadership.
At just 34 years old, Mamdani will break several barriers, becoming NYC's first Muslim mayor, the initial South Asian to occupy the position, and the first individual of African descent to lead the populous metropolis. The midnight ceremony will unfold at a historic subway station under City Hall, reflecting considerable historical and symbolic weight.
During the inauguration, Mamdani will rest his hand on two Qurans—one a cherished family heirloom from his grandfather, and the other an antique pocket-sized Quran from the late 18th or early 19th century, safeguarded at the New York Public Library's Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
Library representatives have noted that the significant Quran symbolizes the deep-rooted presence and meaningful contributions of Muslim communities throughout New York. Curator Hiba Abid remarked that, distinct from luxuriously crafted religious texts meant for the elite, this Quran's straightforward design—boasting a deep red cover and elegant floral accents—suggests it was made for everyday readers.
Arturo Schomburg, a notable Black Puerto Rican historian recognized for his work on African diaspora history, acquired the manuscript. The route through which the Quran came into Schomburg's possession remains uncertain, yet it is widely regarded as a representation of his fascination with the relationship between Islam and African American cultures.
Reflecting a melding of identities, Mamdani’s life story resonates with that of the Quran. He was born in Uganda to a South Asian family and nurtured in NYC, illustrating the rich tapestry of identities that characterize modern New York. His wife, Rama Duwaji, who hails from an American-Syrian heritage, played a vital role in the selection of the historic Quran for the oath-taking ceremony.
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani prioritized key issues such as housing, affordability, and the rising cost of living, all with a strong commitment to his Islamic identity. He actively connected with mosques across every borough, garnering substantial support from Muslim and South Asian communities, many of whom participated in voting for the first time.
His swift ascent has not been without challenges, attracting critiques and instances of Islamophobic remarks. Still, Mamdani steadfastly affirms his identity, declaring he will not conceal his faith or adapt for the sake of political expediency.
Post-inauguration, the historic Quran that was featured during the ceremony will be displayed at the New York Public Library, with officials expressing hope that this event will inspire greater engagement with the city’s extensive Islamic heritage.
Mamdani’s swearing-in represents not only his personal accomplishment but also a significant chapter for New York City, illustrating its dynamic identity and ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion.
