Winter rains lashed the Gaza Strip over the weekend, leaving tent camps submerged in ankle-deep water as Palestinians displaced by two years of conflict struggled to stay dry. Many shelters, worn by months of use and war damage, collapsed under the storm.
In Khan Younis, children waded through flooded pathways while families used shovels, tin cans, and bare hands to remove water from tents. Residents reported soaked blankets, mud-filled shelters, and foul odors. “The tent flew away. We don’t know what to do or where to go,” said Majdoleen Tarabein, displaced from Rafah.
The harsh winter has already claimed at least 12 lives, including a 2-week-old infant, due to hypothermia or structural collapses. Gaza’s Health Ministry has warned residents to avoid damaged buildings, though much of the territory remains in ruins. The United Nations estimated in July that nearly 80% of Gaza’s buildings are destroyed or damaged.
Since the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas began on October 10, 414 people in Gaza have been killed and 1,142 injured. Overall, the war has resulted in at least 71,266 Palestinian deaths.
Aid Shortfalls Exacerbate Crisis
Humanitarian aid has struggled to reach Gaza at the scale needed. Israeli military figures show 4,200 trucks delivered aid last week, along with tents, winter clothing, and sanitation support, but aid groups say the numbers are insufficient.
Since the ceasefire began, 72,000 tents and 403,000 tarps have been delivered, according to the Shelter Cluster. Philippe Lazzarini, UN commissioner-general overseeing aid in Gaza, noted on social media, “People in Gaza are surviving in flimsy, waterlogged tents and among ruins. Aid supplies are not being allowed in at the scale required.”
Next Phase of Ceasefire Remains Stalled
Progress on the ceasefire has slowed. Israel has indicated it will not move to the next phase until the remains of the last hostages are accounted for, while Hamas says the destruction in Gaza complicates recovery efforts.
Key next-phase challenges include the deployment of an international stabilization force, establishing a technocratic government, disarming Hamas militants, and further Israeli troop withdrawals. Both sides have accused each other of violating the truce, keeping the region in a precarious state.
