Winter brings cool breezes, slow mornings, and a strong wish for something warm and comforting. While many people go for coffee or regular milk tea, there is one traditional drink that is becoming popular again—Jaggery Tea, also called Gur Chai. This old-style drink, known across South Asia for its soft sweetness and calm flavor, is now becoming a winter favorite in the UAE.
Families, office workers, students, and even fitness lovers are choosing jaggery tea because it is simple to make, tastes rich, and brings natural warmth to the body.
Jaggery tea is made using unrefined jaggery, which comes from sugarcane or palm sap. Unlike white sugar, jaggery is not highly processed, so it keeps its natural minerals. When mixed with hot water, tea leaves, and warm spices like ginger or cardamom, the drink feels soothing—almost like a warm hug from inside.
People love it because:
It has a gentle, natural sweetness
It warms the body quickly
It gives energy without making you tired later
It has a rich, home-like taste
It is healthier than drinks made with processed sugar
Even though the ingredients are simple, the comfort it brings on a cold day is unforgettable.
Jaggery naturally produces warmth in the body. Many cultures use jaggery during winter for this reason. One cup of jaggery tea can help you feel active and comfortable even on chilly days.
Cold weather can slow down digestion. Jaggery tea helps activate digestive enzymes, making the stomach feel lighter. It can also reduce bloating and helps the body break down food easily.
Jaggery contains iron, antioxidants, and minerals that help the immune system stay strong. This makes jaggery tea helpful during winter when colds and coughs are common.
Winter often brings throat irritation. The warm steam from the tea and the softness of jaggery help soothe the throat and bring quick relief.
White sugar gives quick energy but causes tiredness soon after. Jaggery releases energy slowly, keeping the body active for longer. It is a more natural option for people trying to avoid processed sugar.
Making jaggery tea takes only a few minutes and uses ingredients most people already have.
1–2 teaspoons jaggery
1 cup water
1 teaspoon tea leaves
A pinch of ginger or cardamom (optional)
Milk (optional)
Heat water in a pot and bring it to a boil.
Add tea leaves and let them cook for a minute.
Add ginger or cardamom if you want extra flavor.
Turn off the heat.
Add jaggery and stir until it melts completely.
Strain and enjoy the drink warm.
You can choose to add milk or drink it as black tea—both taste great.
Winter in the UAE brings cooler evenings and gentle winds, especially from November to February. Many people living in the UAE come from countries where jaggery tea is a common winter drink—such as India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh.
This familiar taste is now becoming common in many parts of Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, and Abu Dhabi.
Small cafés and traditional tea spots have started offering jaggery tea on their menus. Customers say it tastes nostalgic and reminds them of home, making it perfect for the winter season.
People working long hours prefer jaggery tea because it gives gentle energy without being too strong or sugary. It keeps them warm and refreshed during busy days and late nights.
Parents also choose jaggery tea for their children in winter. Since jaggery is natural and light on the stomach, it’s a comforting drink for the whole family.
Whether you're preparing for work early in the morning, studying late at night, relaxing on the balcony, or winding down after a long day, jaggery tea fits every moment. Its soft aroma fills the room, and one sip can instantly warm you up.
Many households in the UAE have started calling jaggery tea their “winter special” drink, choosing it over sugary or heavy beverages.
Jaggery tea is simple, wholesome, and packed with natural benefits. It warms the body, supports digestion, boosts immunity, and carries a taste that feels homely and comforting. As winter continues across the UAE, this traditional drink is becoming the season’s favorite partner.
So the next time the cold wind blows or you need something calming after a long day, make yourself a cup of jaggery tea. It might just become your new winter habit.
