Veteran South Indian actor B Saroja Devi passed away at the age of 87 in Bengaluru on Monday. According to film industry sources and the news agency PTI, she died due to age-related health issues at her home in Malleswaram, Bengaluru.
Who Was B Saroja Devi?
B Saroja Devi was one of the most respected and loved actors in the South Indian film industry. She was born in Karnataka and became famous across Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi films. In Tamil, people fondly called her “Kannadathu Paingili” which means “Kannada’s parrot” because of her sweet and lively expressions. In Kannada, she was called “Abhinaya Saraswathi”, meaning “Saraswathi of expressions”, because she acted so beautifully and naturally.

Her Journey Into Films
Saroja Devi started her acting career when she was just 17 years old. Her first movie was Mahakavi Kalidasa released in 1955 in Kannada. This movie became very popular, and she even won a National Award for her amazing acting in her debut film. After this, many filmmakers wanted to cast her in their movies.
In 1958, she acted in a Tamil film called Nadodi Mannan with legendary actor and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, MG Ramachandran (MGR). This film became a big hit and made her one of the top actresses in Tamil cinema. Her pairing with MGR was loved by audiences, and they acted together in many blockbusters like Enga Veetu Pillai and Anbe Vaa. People never forgot their romantic on-screen pairing.
Her Successful Career
B Saroja Devi was called the first female superstar of Kannada cinema because of her consistent success in movies. Even after she got married in 1967, she continued to act in films, especially in Tamil cinema. This was a big achievement because in those days, many actresses would stop acting after marriage. But Saroja Devi was different. She managed her personal life and professional life with great balance and dedication.

Actor and politician Khushbu Sundar posted a heartfelt message on X (formerly Twitter). She wrote, “An era of golden cinema comes to an end. #SarojaDevi amma was the greatest of all times. No other female actor in south has ever enjoyed the name and fame as her. Such a lovable, adorable soul she was. Had a great rapport with her. My trip to Bengaluru was incomplete without meeting her. And whenever in Chennai, she would call. Will miss her immensely. Rest in peace Amma. Om Shanti. #SarojaDevi.”
Khushbu Sundar’s words showed how close she was to Saroja Devi and how much she respected her as a senior actor and guide.
Industry Tracker Sreedhar Pillai Remembers Her Legacy
Famous film industry tracker Sreedhar Pillai wrote, “#SarojaDevi (87) the yesteryear popular actress passed away in Bengaluru. In the golden era of south Indian cinema she ruled! Who can forget the romantic MGR-Saroja Devi pairing in blockbusters like Enga Veetu Pillai, Anbe Vaa etc?”
He reminded people how much her movies with MGR entertained and touched audiences.

Even after becoming so famous, Saroja Devi remained humble and kind to everyone. People who met her always said she was very down-to-earth and loving. She married Sri Harsha in 1967, and they were a happy couple until his death in 1986. She continued to act in movies after her husband’s death as well, because acting was her life and passion.
Her Last Days
In her last days, she was living in Malleswaram, Bengaluru. Due to old age, her health had become weak, and she was facing age-related illnesses. On Monday, she passed away peacefully at her residence.

Her funeral will be attended by many celebrities, politicians, and fans who want to say a final goodbye to this legendary actor.
