The United States recently deported a group of Indian nationals residing in the country illegally, arranging their return on a chartered flight to India on October 22. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) coordinated this deportation with the Indian government as part of a broader commitment to enforcing U.S. immigration laws and promoting lawful migration routes.
Kristie A. Canegallo, a high-ranking DHS official overseeing deportation and border policy, emphasized the consequences for individuals who attempt unauthorized entry into the U.S., warning potential migrants against misleading promises made by smugglers. "Indian nationals without a legal basis to remain in the United States are subject to swift removal," Canegallo noted, reinforcing the U.S.'s firm stance on illegal immigration.

The DHS highlighted a significant decline in unlawful entries at the U.S.-Mexico border, with reported crossings dropping by 55% since the “Securing the Border Presidential Proclamation” was introduced in June 2024. This directive, alongside an accompanying Interim Final Rule, aims to fortify border security and reduce illegal migration, facilitating repatriations of unauthorized migrants as part of its comprehensive immigration management approach.
In fiscal year 2024, the DHS conducted over 495 repatriation flights across more than 145 countries, deporting or removing over 160,000 individuals without legal residency. These deportations included individuals from numerous countries such as Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Egypt, Mauritania, Senegal, Uzbekistan, China, and India.
In its statement, DHS reiterated its ongoing efforts to work with international governments to ensure the smooth return of citizens who do not have a legal right to stay in the U.S. The department also highlighted a variety of strategies used to manage and mitigate illegal migration, including holding transnational criminal organizations accountable for human trafficking and exploitation. This coordinated global approach is intended to create safer, lawful, and regulated pathways for migration while cracking down on the trafficking networks that often prey on vulnerable populations.
This latest deportation effort is part of an extensive push by the U.S. to enforce immigration laws ahead of the upcoming presidential election, underscoring a critical focus on border security and legal migration pathways.
