Andrii Sybiha, Ukraine's Foreign Minister, has openly criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for launching missile and drone attacks on major Ukrainian cities while peace negotiations proceeded in Abu Dhabi. He described these actions as “manipulative” and “inhumane,” indicating that they erode any trust in Putin's commitment to the discussions.
The assaults struck Kyiv and Kharkiv on Saturday, resulting in one fatality and injuring at least 23 individuals. Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia deployed 375 drones and 21 missiles, primarily targeting energy facilities, which left countless people without warmth or electricity amid freezing conditions. Approximately 800,000 residents in Kyiv felt the impact of these attacks. Emergency responders are actively working to restore services.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy earlier remarked that it was premature to evaluate the Abu Dhabi discussions, insisting that true dedication to peace must come from Russia. The talks, facilitated by the U.S., aim to unite Ukraine, Russia, and U.S. officials in pursuit of a resolution to the ongoing four-year conflict.
A significant hurdle persists with Russia's insistence that Ukraine relinquish control of the eastern Donbas region, incorporating Donetsk and Luhansk. Ukraine still retains roughly 20% of Donetsk, and Zelenskiy has resolutely denied ceding territories that remain under his nation’s control. Public sentiment strongly opposes such concessions, as reflected in recent polls.
Prior to Saturday's onslaught, Kyiv had already weathered two substantial attacks this year, inflicting severe disruptions in electricity and heating across numerous residential buildings amid harsh winter conditions.
While Russia professes a commitment to diplomacy, it continues to lean on military actions whenever talks falter. Ukraine cautions that strikes during negotiations erode trust and diminish the likelihood of peace.
These missile assaults underscore the substantial challenges in resolving the conflict. The ongoing dialogue is being watched closely worldwide, with hopes for a resolution that preserves Ukraine's sovereignty and ensures the safety of its citizens.
