In a bid to become Japan’s leading imported car manufacturer as soon as next year, Tesla is ramping up its expansion efforts in the country. The company is enhancing its footprint with a more extensive retail and service network designed to fortify its position in the local market.
Richi Hashimoto, Japan’s country head, revealed that Tesla plans to increase its network to approximately 60 retail locations and nearly 30 service centres, significantly elevating its presence from the current 35 stores and 14 facilities found nationwide.
This expansion coincides with the anticipated launch of the Model Y L in Japan, an electric vehicle tailored for families with its six-seat configuration. Tesla has initiated order taking for this new model to attract a wider audience beyond the early adopters of EV technology.
Critical to Tesla’s strategy in Japan is enhancing customer experience, notably through test-drive-centric stores. The company believes that allowing prospective buyers to engage with the vehicles will help dispel apprehensions among those who are used to conventional gasoline cars.
Globally, Tesla is shifting its focus to markets like Japan, where electric vehicle acceptance remains modest. This strategic pivot is crucial as EV sales have begun to plateau in key markets like the United States, pushing the company to tap into new potential growth areas.
Despite aspiring to take the lead, Tesla finds itself up against formidable competition in Japan’s imported car landscape, which has been traditionally led by established European manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz. These companies continue to dominate sales, setting high expectations for Tesla to meet.
Nevertheless, Tesla’s expanding infrastructure, complemented by a strong focus on innovation and engaging customers, may provide the momentum needed to thrive in the Japanese market. The company is setting the stage for sustained growth, aiming to transform the electric vehicle landscape within the country.
