Abu Dhabi has taken a significant leap toward the future of healthcare with the launch of the Abu Dhabi Biobank, a pioneering platform designed to revolutionise how diseases are detected, prevented, and treated.
Developed through a strategic collaboration between the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi and M42, the initiative marks a major shift from traditional reactive care to a more proactive, data-driven healthcare model focused on early risk identification and personalised treatment.
Located in Masdar City, the state-of-the-art, net-zero facility is capable of storing over 100,000 cord blood samples and up to five million biological samples. This makes it one of the most advanced and diverse health data repositories in the region.
The biobank integrates biological samples with genomic, clinical, and lifestyle data at a population scale. This unique approach enables healthcare providers to detect diseases earlier, improve diagnostic accuracy, and tailor treatments to individual patient needs.
The launch event was attended by key leaders, including Mansoor Ibrahim Al Mansoori, Dr. Noura Al Ghaithi, and Dimitris Moulavasilis, along with representatives from global healthcare institutions, research bodies, and academia.
A key highlight of the initiative is the introduction of two major capabilities: a comprehensive pan-human biobank that connects long-term health data, and a national eye bank aimed at strengthening local transplantation services while reducing reliance on imported tissues.
Experts say the platform will not only benefit residents through earlier disease detection and more precise treatments but will also contribute to global medical research. By drawing insights from a diverse population of over 200 nationalities, the biobank enhances the relevance and effectiveness of healthcare innovations worldwide.
Officials emphasised that the Abu Dhabi Biobank is designed as a “living platform,” continuously evolving by integrating real-world health data to support prevention strategies, clinical decision-making, and advanced research.
According to Dr. Noura Al Ghaithi, the initiative reflects a broader transformation in healthcare—from reacting to illness to anticipating and preventing it—ultimately improving patient outcomes and quality of life.
Meanwhile, M42 CEO Dimitris Moulavasilis highlighted that combining biological data with artificial intelligence and genomics will enable faster insights, better healthcare decisions, and improved outcomes at scale.
