More than 40 allies of the United States convened on Thursday in a high-level virtual meeting to address the escalating crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy corridor disrupted amid ongoing tensions with Iran.
The meeting, led by the United Kingdom, brought together countries from Europe, the Middle East, Asia, along with Australia and Canada. The primary focus was to explore diplomatic engagement with Tehran and consider coordinated sanctions if Iran refuses to unblock the strategic waterway.
The discussions reflected growing international concern over the impact of the conflict, particularly amid uncertainty surrounding US President Donald Trump’s next steps. Several participating nations expressed fears that the United States may withdraw from the situation without securing a concrete plan to restore safe navigation through the strait.
Participants emphasized that any potential ceasefire negotiations with Iran must include a clear resolution for reopening the Hormuz route, which is critical for global oil shipments. However, the meeting also highlighted the possibility that allied nations may need to act independently if US involvement diminishes.
The talks come amid rising tensions between the US and its NATO partners, following criticism from Donald Trump over their reluctance to deploy military forces in the region. The meeting signaled a willingness among European nations, including the UK and France, to contribute toward stabilizing the situation.
Japan also played a key role during the discussions. Its Foreign Minister, Toshimitsu Motegi, called for international cooperation to establish secure maritime corridors for vessels currently stranded in the Persian Gulf. He further stressed the importance of maintaining stable global energy supplies.
Looking ahead, military planners from participating countries are expected to meet next week to evaluate deployment strategies for naval forces, including potential de-mining operations once hostilities subside. However, there remains limited support for using force to reopen the strait, as most nations believe a sustainable solution requires Iran’s cooperation.
The role of the United Nations was also highlighted as crucial in facilitating diplomatic efforts. Countries discussed working alongside Gulf partners to ensure freedom of navigation and prevent the imposition of any toll system by Iran, which could set a concerning global precedent.
Economic measures, including targeted sanctions, were also considered as tools to prevent Iran from benefiting from the continued disruption of one of the world’s most critical shipping lanes.
