Mumbai witnessed a significant diplomatic moment as British Prime Minister Keir Starmer arrived for his first official visit to India, accompanied by a 125-strong trade delegation—the largest from the UK to date. The visit comes in the wake of a landmark free trade agreement inked between London and New Delhi, aimed at boosting bilateral commerce and investment.
Unprecedented Business Opportunities
Starmer described the trade prospects as “unparalleled,” highlighting India’s emergence as the world’s third-largest economy by 2028. The new agreement promises faster, cheaper trade, with India reducing tariffs on British goods like whisky, cosmetics, and medical devices. The UK, in turn, will lower duties on Indian products, including clothing, footwear, and frozen prawns.

The PM’s delegation features key business leaders such as British Airways CEO Sean Doyle, signaling strong private sector interest. “The opportunities are already opening up,” Starmer told his team, noting that bilateral trade had surged significantly over the past year.
Strengthening Economic Ties
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Starmer warmly, emphasizing the shared vision for “a stronger, mutually prosperous future.” The deal is expected to reinforce job creation, with over 600,000 positions already supported through bilateral investments. Starmer’s schedule includes meetings with Modi and addressing a major fintech conference in Mumbai, underscoring the growing economic collaboration.
Balancing Challenges and Expectations
Despite trade optimism, Starmer confirmed that expanding visa access for Indian professionals would not be part of the current agreement. Human rights groups continue to raise concerns over long-standing cases involving Indian detainees, adding a layer of complexity to the diplomatic engagement.
As India and the UK embark on this new trade chapter, businesses on both sides are already positioning to seize the benefits, while policymakers focus on swift implementation of the historic agreement.
