The ongoing unrest in Southport, now in its sixth day following the tragic stabbing of three girls, has intensified due to a mix of online misinformation, far-right group activity, and anti-immigration rhetoric. This unrest has captured national attention and sparked a contentious exchange between Elon Musk and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Elon Musk's controversial remarks, in which he predicted that "civil war is inevitable" in the UK amidst the violent turmoil, drew immediate criticism from the Prime Minister's spokesperson. The spokesperson condemned Musk’s comments as unjustifiable, emphasizing that such statements have no place in the current climate of unrest, as reported by the BBC.
In response, Musk took issue with Starmer’s condemnation of attacks on mosques and Muslim communities, questioning why the Prime Minister wasn’t equally concerned about attacks on all communities. Musk’s reply suggested that Starmer's focus was too narrow, highlighting a perceived selectivity in addressing violence.

This exchange underscores the deepening divide between Musk and Starmer, with Musk's inflammatory comments contrasting sharply with Starmer's calls for calm and protection for all communities. Musk further fueled the controversy by sharing a video of an arrest related to online comments, questioning whether the UK was becoming akin to the Soviet Union and implying a biased police response.
Justice Minister Heidi Alexander strongly rebuked Musk’s statements, labeling them as “totally unjustifiable” and “pretty deplorable.” She condemned Musk’s remarks as baseless and highlighted the broader issue of misinformation exacerbating the unrest. Alexander stressed the need for social media companies to address their role in spreading misinformation and combating online falsehoods.
In alignment with Alexander’s stance, UK authorities have rejected claims of discriminatory policing, urging social media platforms to prevent the proliferation of harmful content. The Prime Minister’s spokesperson reiterated this position, stressing the obligation of social media firms to curb the dissemination of criminal activity and content amplified by state actors.
Adam Leon Smith, a fellow of the British Computer Society (BCS), called for tangible actions against platforms like X (formerly Twitter), suggesting that fines and the enforcement of the Online Safety Act could help mitigate the impact of misinformation. Technology Secretary Peter Kyle held discussions with major tech companies to reinforce their responsibility in managing hateful content.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper also criticized Musk’s remarks, emphasizing the government's intolerance for “armchair thuggery” and calling on social media firms to take stronger measures against harmful content.
In response to the recent unrest, social media platforms have been approached for comments. However, Snap (Snapchat's parent company) indicated it had not been contacted by the government regarding the disorder.
The UK's Online Safety Act, which will soon come into effect, aims to hold social media firms accountable for illegal content. PM Keir Starmer has underscored that online actions fall under the same criminal laws as those offline.
Criticism of Musk’s comments has been widespread. Satirist Armando Iannucci accused Musk of being misled by his own platform, which he claims amplifies noise over factual content. Meanwhile, Sunder Katwala, director of the think tank British Future, warned that Musk's statements risk endorsing violence under the guise of defending particular groups and called for a robust governmental response.
Ofcom, the UK’s communications regulator, has pledged to enforce the Online Safety Act rigorously. An Ofcom spokesperson stated that the illegal harms duties will come into force by the end of the year, with additional requirements for the largest services expected by 2026.
