The United States Department of State has approved a $16.5 billion arms sale to Gulf countries on March 19 as tensions with Iran continue to rise. The move is aimed at strengthening the defence systems of key allies in the region.

The administration of Donald Trump has also cleared additional weapons deals worth around $7 billion for the United Arab Emirates.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued emergency waivers to speed up the process. This allowed the government to bypass the usual congressional review period, citing “Iranian provocations” that have targeted regional energy infrastructure.

Details Of The $16.5 Billion Deal

The package is divided among three key allies:

  • United Arab Emirates ($8.4+ billion):
Includes long-range radars, counter-drone systems, 400 AMRAAM missiles, and upgrades for F-16 fighter jets.

  • Kuwait ($8 billion):
Focuses on advanced air and missile defence radars to detect high-speed threats.

  • Jordan ($70.5 million):
    Provides aircraft support and munitions.

Additional $7 Billion Deal With UAE

Reports suggest another $7 billion deal with the UAE includes:

  • Patriot PAC-3 missile systems

  • Chinook military helicopters

These systems are designed to strengthen air defence and improve rapid response capabilities.

Why The US Is Fast-Tracking These Deals

The US says the weapons sales are necessary to help allies defend themselves against increasing threats linked to Iran. The goal is to improve regional security and prevent further attacks on critical infrastructure.

How The US Benefits From These Deals

While the deals are presented as security measures, they also bring economic and strategic benefits to the US:

  • Major defence companies like Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and RTX Corporation gain large contracts.

  • Increased production supports jobs and keeps manufacturing active.

  • Countries buying US weapons rely on American training, parts, and systems for years.

  • Rising oil prices benefit US energy-producing states and exports.

  • Companies like Palantir Technologies are seeing growth due to demand for AI-based defence systems.

Impact On The Region

These deals will strengthen a US-led defence network across Gulf nations. They are expected to improve coordination and deterrence against threats from Iran.

However, critics argue that large-scale arms sales may increase militarisation and could prolong conflict instead of reducing tensions.
