Dubai: The UAE Football Association (UAEFA) has sent a clear warning to all football clubs in the country, saying that questioning the fairness or skill of match referees will not be tolerated. This announcement came after Al Ain Football Club voiced strong criticism about referee decisions in their opening-day 2-1 victory against Al Bataeh in the ADNOC Pro League.
UAEFA Rejects Criticism of Referees
In an official statement, the UAEFA said it “absolutely rejects inappropriate criticism” of referees. The association also confirmed that legal measures could be taken against Al Ain or any other club or individual who publicly undermines the work of match officials.

The statement highlighted that referees are trained and supervised by highly qualified experts, and their development is strictly the responsibility of the Football Association. UAEFA emphasized that clubs are not allowed to question referee decisions in public. Instead, clubs that are unhappy with local referees have the option to request foreign officials, but only through official channels approved by the association.
Al Ain Coach Speaks Out
Al Ain’s head coach, Vladimir Ivi, spoke after the match, expressing his frustration with the referee’s decisions. He claimed that his team had scored five goals, three of which were disallowed by the match officials.
“For the first time in my career, I saw my team score five goals but the final result was 2-1,” said Ivi, a Serbian coach. “We definitely deserved more from this match.”
His comments quickly drew attention from the media and football fans, but UAEFA’s warning made it clear that such public criticism could lead to penalties or legal action.
Match Highlights and Milestones
Despite the controversy, the match itself was notable for several achievements and exciting moments.
Togolese forward Kodjo Fo-Doh Laba scored in first-half stoppage time, a goal officially recognized as the 9,000th goal in the history of the ADNOC Pro League. This milestone is a moment of pride for the league and its players.
Al Bataeh managed to equalize in the 69th minute through a goal by Uzbekistan’s Azizjon Ganiev.
Al Ain ultimately won the match with a late header from Abdoul Karim Traoré in the 82nd minute, securing their first three points of the season.
New Cooling System at Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium
The match also marked the debut of Al Ain’s new integrated cooling system at Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium. This system includes over 300 air-conditioning units installed around the stadium to improve spectator comfort during the hot summer months. Fans attending the game appreciated the cooler environment, making it easier to enjoy the match without being affected by the high temperatures outside.
UAEFA’s Broader Message
While Al Ain celebrated their opening-day win, the main focus quickly shifted to the UAEFA’s announcement. The association made it clear that referees are protected, and any public criticism that questions their integrity or competence is considered unacceptable. Legal action is now an option for clubs or individuals who cross this line.
The UAEFA’s statement also stresses the importance of maintaining respect for officials. Referees play a critical role in football, ensuring that games are fair and rules are followed. The association wants to make sure that all clubs understand this responsibility and use the proper channels to voice concerns if necessary.
Why Referee Protection Matters
Referees are trained professionals who dedicate years to understanding the rules of football and improving their skills. Public criticism or questioning their decisions can undermine their authority, affect their confidence, and create unnecessary tension within the league.
By enforcing strict rules against public criticism, the UAEFA aims to maintain fairness and professionalism in the league. Clubs are encouraged to raise concerns through approved procedures rather than media statements, ensuring that football continues to be played in a fair and respectful environment.
Looking Ahead
This warning from the UAEFA serves as a reminder to all clubs in the ADNOC Pro League that maintaining respect for referees is non-negotiable. Al Ain’s next matches will be closely watched, both for their performance on the pitch and for their adherence to the association’s guidelines.
For fans, this is also a chance to enjoy competitive football in a safe and well-managed environment, where players and referees can focus on the game rather than off-field controversies.
Al Ain’s opening match was exciting and historic, with memorable goals and stadium improvements. However, the broader takeaway from the match is UAEFA’s firm stance on protecting referees and maintaining respect in football. Clubs are reminded to follow official procedures if they have concerns, and public criticism will not be tolerated. This approach ensures that the ADNOC Pro League continues to grow as a professional, fair, and enjoyable competition for players, officials, and fans alike.
