Every year on 2 December, the United Arab Emirates celebrates its National Day, also known as Eid Al Etihad, marking the historic union of its seven emirates in 1971. In 2025, the country will mark its 54th National Day with grand displays, cultural showcases and public joy. The government has announced December 2 and 3 as official holidays, raising the possibility of a longer weekend for residents and visitors. Expect the nation to glow with festive spirit: streets, buildings and landmarks will be decorated with national colors; parades and performances will fill public spaces; and dazzling fireworks and light shows will dominate evening skies across the Emirates.
The UAE National Day commemorates the union of the seven sheikhdoms — Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al‑Quwain, Fujairah and later Ras Al Khaimah — into a single federation. It honors the vision of the founding fathers, especially Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and Sheikh Rashid, whose leadership paved the way for economic progress and unity. Over time, National Day has become a moment of pride, cultural reflection and national identity.
Fireworks, light shows and spectacles will be visible across major emirates. Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, Abu Dhabi Corniche, Dubai Festival City, Bluewaters Island and Sharjah’s waterfronts are top venues for these visual spectacles. Illustrative LED animations, synchronized music bridges and laser shows make these experiences immersive and unforgettable. Public squares, parks and heritage zones host performances of traditional dances such as Al Ayallah and Al Harbiya and musical acts. Street parades involve floats, decorated vehicles and sometimes military processions. Buildings, streets, palm trees and parks will be draped in the UAE flag colors — red, green, white and black. Many residents decorate cars, balconies and shops. Heritage Villages, museums and cultural centers stage exhibitions, workshops and storytelling reflecting the nation’s past, arts and traditions. Public food festivals, pop-up stalls and family-friendly zones will serve traditional Emirati dishes, sweets and snacks. Community events, children’s activities and concerts make it a collective celebration.
Arrive early at popular fireworks or parade locations as spots fill up fast. Use public transport or walk when possible as traffic will be heavy near landmarks. Dress comfortably but respectfully, incorporating national colors. Bring water and snacks if you plan long outdoor waits. Plan for after‑sunset as many of the best shows occur at night. Look out for special shows in your emirate as not everything is centralized in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Respect local rules in public spaces, especially during large gatherings. Capture memories but do not let your phone make you miss the moment.
With the extended public holiday and the growing tradition of National Month in Dubai — a month of celebrations from Flag Day on 3 November to National Day — 2025’s Eid Al Etihad is set to be more expansive than ever. The government’s push for deeper unity, stronger national identity and inclusive celebrations across communities suggests a richer, more immersive experience.
