The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has broken its record for the hottest day in May—not once, but two days in a row. On Saturday, the temperature reached a scorching 51.6 degrees Celsius in a place called Sweihan, near the city of Al Ain. This happened at 1:45 in the afternoon, local time.
The day before, on Friday, it was also extremely hot. That day, the temperature was 50.4 degrees Celsius in the Abu Dhabi area. Both of these days were hotter than the previous May record of 50.2 degrees, which was set back in 2009.

The UAE is mostly desert and is one of the hottest places on Earth. It is also one of the biggest oil producers in the world. Scientists say places like the UAE are especially at risk from climate change. That means things like extreme heat, less water, and food problems could happen more often.
Experts also say that heatwaves—times when it gets very, very hot for days—are becoming more common and more dangerous because of global warming. Global warming is caused by things like pollution and too much use of oil, gas, and coal.
In fact, a report from Greenpeace in 2022 said that the Middle East is warming almost twice as fast as the rest of the world. The report looked at six countries, including the UAE, and warned that this could lead to serious problems with water, food, and health in the future.
The number of extremely hot days around the world has almost doubled in the last 30 years. If nothing changes, these heatwaves could happen more often and last even longer.
This record-breaking heat in the UAE is a strong reminder of how the planet’s climate is changing—and why it’s important for everyone to take action.
