The UAE is becoming a strong example for the world in building a peaceful and safe nuclear energy program. The country has worked hard to follow top safety rules, be open with its plans, and build strong friendships with other countries.
As the world looks for better and cleaner ways to make energy, especially to fight climate change, the UAE is showing the way by using nuclear power in a safe and responsible manner.
From the beginning, the UAE chose to work closely with other countries. It formed important partnerships, especially with South Korea and the United States, to help grow its nuclear energy plans.
A Clear Vision for the Future
Mohamed Al Hammadi, the CEO of Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), explained how the UAE's nuclear program is known and respected around the world. He said the country’s success comes from strong leadership, a clear plan, and a promise to always follow safety and honesty.
He shared this during an interview, adding that the UAE has worked closely with other countries to improve nuclear energy. At the COP28 climate event, more than 30 nations agreed to increase nuclear energy use by 2050, with support from nearly 120 companies and banks. This shows the growing trust in nuclear power as a clean energy source.
Supporting New Technology and Global Projects
Al Hammadi also talked about the growing partnership between the UAE and the US. Together, they are working on new ideas, especially in areas like artificial intelligence and data centers. Clean energy like nuclear power is needed to support these modern technologies. One such effort is the "Stargate UAE" project, which aims to make Abu Dhabi a global leader in tech.
ENEC and the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) are leading the UAE's efforts. They are working with experts and groups from other countries to learn from each other and build skilled teams.
Strong Ties with South Korea and the US
The partnership with South Korea has been very important, especially for building the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant. This friendship has now grown to include new plans like using smaller reactors, called Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), in future projects.
The UAE and South Korea continue to share their knowledge and check on each other’s progress to make sure everything stays safe and updated.
The UAE has also signed many deals with the United States. For example, it is working with the U.S. Department of Energy to create new ways of using nuclear energy to make hydrogen and water. It is also working with companies like TerraPower, General Atomics, and GE Vernova to test and use new reactor technology in different parts of the world.
New Plans with China and Romania
The UAE is now exploring new opportunities with China. They may work together on building and running nuclear plants, not just in their own countries, but also in other places. This includes sharing fuel supplies and new technology.
FANR is also working with other countries' nuclear agencies to make sure nuclear energy is safe, secure, and used only for peaceful reasons.
Recently, the UAE signed an agreement with Romania to help build a Small Modular Reactor project. The UAE is supporting this with an investment of $275 million.
