Behind Closed Doors By Jyoti Gupta — Intern Journalist, DXB News Network, Dubai, UAE.
Behind every perfect Instagram post, every cheerful family dinner, every smiling woman in the office—there may lie a truth so dark, it hides behind locked doors and sealed lips. This is not just a story of bruises on skin—it is about the wounds carved into the soul. About the silence that society calls patience. About fear dressed as love. And finally—about the courage to say: "No more." This is Rachel’s journey. But it could be anyone’s.
The Office — 7:00 PM "It’s late, Rachel. Why aren’t you heading home?" asked David, zipping up his laptop bag. Rachel forced a tired smile. “Still have some reports to wrap up. You go on.” David paused, concerned. “But doesn’t Aaron worry when you're late? You never stay back.” “He’s away. Business trip,” she lied, eyes flickering to her screen. David nodded, reluctantly. “Alright. But text me when you get home, okay?” Rachel nodded again. The office door clicked shut behind him. She exhaled a long, trembling breath. Aaron wasn’t away. He was very much in town—probably drinking with his colleagues in some downtown bar. She wasn’t avoiding home because of work. She was avoiding him. Last night, he had struck her. A hard slap across her face. The reason? She hadn’t made his favorite lemon tart. Two years of marriage, and it had finally happened—the first hit.
The Memory Lane - Rachel sat still, letting the cold air of the office seep into her bones. Her mind drifted. She remembered their first meeting. An arranged marriage of sorts—modern matchmaking. He was charming, well-spoken, and a successful consultant. Her parents had approved instantly. But within days, the mask slipped. The controlling behavior, the sharp words, the sudden anger. At first, it was about how she dressed. Then how she cooked. Then how she spoke. He would shout, insult her, then act as if nothing had happened. And she? She adapted. Smiled through it. Made excuses—for him, for herself. But that slap had changed something. She had heard stories of women who forgave the first hit, only to drown in a sea of bruises later. Was that the future she was silently accepting?
Sophie’s Apartment — 9:00 PM She jolted awake. It was 8:30. The office was empty. Outside, the city buzzed. But inside her, everything was silent. She didn't want to go home. She opened her phone and typed a name—Sophie. Her childhood friend. Fearless, vibrant Sophie. Married to Neil, a high-ranking software engineer. Big house. Happy family. Or so she believed. She booked a cab and headed to Sophie’s apartment, unannounced. As she stepped out of the elevator, something made her stop. Muffled cries. Her heart pounded. The door was unlocked. She stepped in. What she saw froze her soul. Neil stood in the living room, gripping a belt in one hand, Sophie’s hair in the other. Sophie was gagged, her eyes pleading, swollen with tears. Behind a locked door, their children banged and cried for their mother. Rachel stood there, shattered. Neil spotted her, dropped the belt like a hot iron, and ran. Rachel rushed to Sophie, untied the gag, helped her sit. Sophie trembled, unable to meet her eyes. “It’s been going on for years,” Sophie whispered. “I stay... for the kids. My parents know. But they say leaving would ruin my younger sister’s marriage prospects. Where would I go? Who would take me in?”Rachel stared, tears brimming. The woman she thought had it all—was living a nightmare like hers. And worse, she had stayed. Silently. Every day. For years.
The Decision Rachel stumbled out into the cool night air, her breath uneven. She felt the weight of Sophie’s words like a noose tightening around her own future. She saw herself—five years ahead. A bruised face. A silenced voice. A broken woman behind a polished smile. No. Not her. She opened her phone and called another cab. But this time—not home. To a hotel. She wasn’t running away. She was breaking free.
The Dawn As the city lights dimmed and the horizon turned pink, Rachel stood by the hotel window. She hadn’t informed anyone. Not her parents. Not even David. Tomorrow, she would. But tonight, she had taken the first step. Not all chains are iron. Some are made of silence. And silence is the hardest to break. She had broken hers.
A Note from the Writer This is not just Rachel’s story. Or Sophie’s.It is the story of millions of women. Of men and women too afraid to speak, too ashamed to leave, too conditioned to believe that suffering in silence is dignity. But remember this: The abuser is guilty. But silence is an accomplice. To endure abuse is never your duty. To leave is not weakness—it is courage. And to the reader—this story demands more than sympathy. It demands action. If you know someone like Rachel or Sophie—reach out. If you are someone like Rachel or Sophie—choose yourself. Because the real love story is not about staying. It’s about saving yourself.
