Djokovic Unsure of French Open Return After Semi-Final Defeat to Sinner
Novak Djokovic, one of tennis’ greatest legends, hinted that his semi-final loss to Jannik Sinner at the 2025 French Open might have been his final match at Roland Garros. The 38-year-old Serbian, who has won 24 Grand Slam titles including three French Open trophies, lost in straight sets 6-4, 7-5, 7-6(3) to the current world number one.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Djokovic became emotional while reflecting on his future at the iconic Paris tournament. “This could have been the last match I ever played here. I don’t know,” he said. “That’s why I was a bit more emotional in the end.”
As he left Court Philippe Chatrier, Djokovic received a standing ovation from the crowd. He paused, bent down, touched the red clay, and saluted the fans — a gesture that left many wondering if it was a silent goodbye.
While Djokovic didn’t confirm retirement, he made it clear that he is prioritizing Grand Slam events going forward. “Wimbledon and the US Open are in my plans. For the rest, I’m not so sure,” he said.
Wimbledon holds a special place in his heart, having grown up dreaming of lifting the trophy on its historic grass courts. “Wimbledon is my childhood favourite. Maybe I have the best chance to win there or at the Australian Open,” he added.
Although he is still chasing a historic 25th Grand Slam title to surpass Margaret Court’s all-time record, Djokovic admitted that age and uncertainty are beginning to weigh on him. “Twelve months is a long time at this stage of my career. Do I want to play more? Yes. But can I? I don’t know,” he said.
Despite the loss, Djokovic remained graceful and appreciative, calling the atmosphere on the court "wonderful" and thanking the fans for their support.
His most recent French Open title came in 2023, and whether we see him again on Paris clay remains a mystery. But if this was the last dance at Roland Garros, Djokovic certainly bowed out with grace and emotion. The match against Sinner was not without its challenges. Djokovic took a medical timeout due to a thigh issue, which may have affected his performance. Nevertheless, he praised Sinner's athleticism and aggressive playing style, acknowledging the 23-year-old's impressive form. This victory marked Sinner's fourth consecutive win over Djokovic, putting the Italian ahead 5-4 in their career matchups
As Djokovic contemplates his future, the tennis world watches with bated breath. Whether or not he returns to Roland Garros, his legacy as one of the sport's greatest players is firmly cemented. His dedication, skill, and sportsmanship have left an indelible mark on tennis history
