The UAE is rapidly shaping its future as a global leader in food security, blending innovation, investment, and infrastructure to create a resilient and self-sufficient food ecosystem. Strategic projects across the country are transforming agriculture, manufacturing, and supply chains, positioning the nation as a competitive hub for regional and international food trade.
In Abu Dhabi, the food and beverage sector is experiencing unprecedented growth. According to the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, active memberships in the sector have surged to 24,594, with small and medium-sized enterprises and start-ups driving a 42.2% increase in new memberships in the first half of 2025 compared to the previous year.
Dubai, meanwhile, is emerging as a global food trade hub thanks to its advanced infrastructure and strategic location connecting multiple continents. The emirate’s integrated logistics system enhances supply chain efficiency, with Jebel Ali Port, the Middle East’s largest, handling roughly 73% of the country’s food and beverage trade and linking to over 150 ports worldwide.
National financial institutions are supporting this growth. The Emirates Development Bank launched the UAE’s first AgriTech financing programme in 2023, allocating AED100 million to innovative food security projects. This initiative helps start-ups develop cutting-edge agricultural technologies and strengthens the nation’s self-sufficiency goals.
The UAE’s approach combines public-private collaboration with long-term planning. Initiatives like the Food Cluster Economy, launched by the Ministry of Economy and Tourism, create comprehensive ecosystems that connect farms, factories, supply chains, and retail, fostering innovation and efficiency while encouraging investment and capacity building.
Food Tech Valley in Dubai is another pivotal project, establishing an integrated platform for agri-tech and food industries. The initiative links local and international companies along the value chain, providing infrastructure, research facilities, and strategic partnerships to accelerate sustainable growth. Over recent years, local products have gained a stronger presence in UAE markets, reflecting the success of policies designed to boost domestic production and competitiveness.
These initiatives are more than just economic measures—they signal a national vision for resilience, innovation, and leadership in the global food sector. By combining technology, strategic investment, and collaborative efforts, the UAE continues to set a benchmark for food security and sustainable growth in the region.
