The United Arab Emirates has officially accepted the credentials of Badruddin Haqqani, the Taliban’s ambassador to the Gulf state, marking a significant diplomatic achievement for Afghanistan’s rulers. This development, confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kabul via a post on social media platform X, represents the Taliban’s most notable diplomatic win since their envoy's appointment to China.
This move highlights the ongoing global division regarding the Taliban's status, as they remain unrecognized by most of the international community as Afghanistan’s legitimate government. While the UAE’s acceptance of Haqqani’s credentials underscores a growing diplomatic engagement, it also underscores the broader challenges faced by the Taliban in achieving formal international recognition.

Badruddin Haqqani, previously the Taliban's envoy to the UAE, is not related to Sirajuddin Haqqani, the Acting Interior Minister and leader of the Haqqani network, who remains on several international sanctions lists and is wanted by the U.S. for his role in various attacks. Despite the Taliban’s continued international isolation, they are actively pursuing bilateral relationships with key regional players. For instance, Uzbek Prime Minister Abdulla Aripov recently made a high-profile visit to Afghanistan, the highest-level foreign visit since the Taliban’s return to power.
The UN has stated that formal recognition of the Taliban is “nearly impossible” as long as restrictions on women and girls persist in the country. This recent diplomatic development reflects a complex and evolving international landscape for Afghanistan’s current rulers.
